Climate Prediction Center’s Central America Hazards Outlook December 17 – 23, 2020

An above average is expected over the coastal areas of eastern Nicaragua for the coming outlook period.

1)A beginning of abnormal dryness has been observed over the coastal areas facing Atlantic Ocean in Costa Rica. For the past month, a below average were registered which led progressively to a non-neglectable moisture deficit over the area.

A continuation of above average is expected over the coastal areas facing the Atlantic Ocean for the coming outlook period.

According to the ENSO alert system of NOAA, La Nina is likely to continue through the northern hemisphere winter 2020-21 with 95% chance during January-March and into spring 2021 with 65% chance during March-May. During the past 7 days, localized rainfall has been recorded over the far southwestern part of Guatemala. Showers to light rainfall has been recorded over the coastal areas of Belize, the northern coastal areas of Honduras, the far southeastern coastal area of Nicaragua. Costa Rica and Panama are showing light to moderate rainfall over their coastal areas facing Atlantic Ocean. For the past 30 days, Costa Rica has registered a below average rainfall leading to an abnormal dryness. Despite the negative anomalies over the Atlantic Ocean coastal of Costa Rica, the vegetation health is showing a growing vegetation. For the coming outlook period, above average is expected over Penten department and central part of Guatemala, Belize, the western-northern-eastern part of Honduras, the eastern part of Nicaragua. A seasonal rainfall is expected over Costa Rica and Panama and the coastal areas of countries facing the Pacific Ocean.
