During the second week of January, rain fell across many of the climatologically favored Caribbean-facing regions. According to gauge reports, rainfall was light to moderate in many cases, but some heavy totals (>50mm) were observed along the northern coast of Honduras and in Belize.

Some light rain was also observed in parts of southern Nicaragua and Panama, but was significantly less than previous weeks. Over the last 30 days, gauge observations indicate that ample rainfall resulting in positive anomalies has been received in Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, and northern Guatemala. However, satellite analysis indicates that the heavier totals may be somewhat limited in spatial scope. The Vegetation Health Index reveals largely healthy vegetation through the first half of January, especially for Pacific-facing regions. A few local areas, such as in Guatemala’s Petén department and northern Belize, indicate negative conditions.

During the outlook period, near-average or slightly wetter than average rainfall is expected. Weather models forecast moderate rains (10-50mm) for portions of Belize and the climatologically favored regions of eastern Honduras and Nicaragua. Models do not indicate any intrusions of colder air into the region during the outlook period.
