Appendix 4.

Catalogue of perforated wedges and high perforated

adzes from the Netherlands (part 2)

In section 3.7 of this study, an overview of the finds of perforated wedges and high perforated adzes is given. This scatter of finds is presented to bring to light human activities in areas otherwise devoid of material remains from the study period. This same data set is then used in chapter 4 for an interpretation in terms of exchange relations of the people of the Swifterbant culture with neighbouring communities further inland.

Fig. 3.35 of section 3.7 is based on Van der Waals’ 1972 article, which presents a catalogue of perforated wedges and high perforated adzes form the Netherlands and Belgium.

His catalogue of Dutch finds is used as the basis of my catalogue.

This appendix contains finds from two partly overlapping sources. The first source encompasses those finds that have been reported in the various annual reports from most Dutch provinces (kronieken) since 1972. This set of artefacts is then enlarged by downloading similar reports from the Dutch national archaeological database ARCHIS, maintained at the Dutch State Service for Archaeological Investigations (ROB). The list of descriptive variables from Van der Waals 1972 (170-171) is reproduced to enable a full comparison.
