During the period from July 1-10, 2008, the African portion of the Intertropical Front (ITF) was located at around 16.0 degrees north latitude, which is significantly below the average of 16.8 degrees north. Figure 1 displays the current position compared to normal, with the ITF currently very close to normal east of Mali. West of Mali the ITF had been lagging throughout much of the season, but after last weeks northward movement, the ITF stalled this week across Africa. The ITF is currently 17.0 degrees north in the west and 14.8 degrees north in the east. Compared with the 1979-2007 mean of around 17.8 degrees north in the west, and a normal position of around 15.3N in the east.
