Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook May 25 - 31, 2017

Temperatures:

Above-normal temperatures (1 to 5 degrees C) persisted across Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and southern Kazakhstan from May 14 to 20. During the final week of May, near to above-normal temperatures are forecast to continue. An abnormal heat hazard is posted for areas where maximum temperatures are forecast to average 4 degrees C or more above normal and exceed 30 degrees C.

Precipitation

During mid-May, scattered areas of rainfall (5 to 50 mm) extended from southeast Kazakhstan to Tajikistan and northeast Afghanistan. Based on the VHI, an abnormal dryness polygon is maintained for parts of Afghanistan.

During the next week, isolated rainfall (locally more than 25 mm) is expected to be limited to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan with more widespread rainfall (10 to 50 mm) across northwest Kazakhstan.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
