During September 11−20, 2011, the ITF’s retreat was somewhat sluggish compared to that during the first dekad of September. Due to strong moist southerly winds in the Gulf of Guinea, the ITF remained to the north of the climatological mean position over Mali and Chad, while it advanced further south along its eastern segment over Sudan. The mean western portion of the ITF approximated 18.1 degrees North and was north of the mean position by 0.4 degree. The ITF’s mean eastern portions was located near 15.6 and was behind of the climatological mean position by only 0.1 degree. Figure 1 shows the current ITF position relative to the long−term average position for the second dekad of September and its previous position during the first dekad of the month. Figures 2 and 3 are time series, illustrating the latitudinal means of the western and eastern portion of the ITF, respectively, and their evolutions since the start of April.
