About the author

Jannes J. Willems (Nijmegen, 1990) holds a Bachelor degree in Environmental and Infrastructure Planning (2011) and a Research Master degree in Regional Studies (2013; with distinction), both from the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen. He was a student-member of the Faculty Council (2011-2012) and held different student-assistantships, for instance related to research on the impacts of climate change on the location behaviour of major freshwater users and on learning capacities in the water construction sector. His master thesis looked into the use of local knowledge in Dutch national water management projects. In addition, he participated in a Brazilian research project on understanding local inhabitants’ capacities to adapt to climate change. For his PhD research (started May 2014), conducted at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen, Jannes used different streams of institutional theories in order to understand actors’ motivations and actions in responding to the change imperative of ageing infrastructures. The research was funded by the public authority Rijkswaterstaat. In addition, Jannes taught courses on planning theory and research methods, and supervised master theses. He also participated in the PhD Council of the Graduate School (2015-2016) and organised multiple seminars and workshops with both academics and practitioners. Part of Jannes’ research was conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the Autumn of 2015, where he was hosted by prof. Larry Susskind.

Jannes presented his work at national and international conferences, and is involved in the AESOP Young Academics community. His work has been published in multiple international peer-reviewed academic journals, as well as Dutch professional platforms such as Verkeerskunde and Ruimtevolk.

Since May 2018, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Public Administration and Sociology, Erasmus University Rotterdam. In this position, he participates in the European Interreg-project Blue-Green Infrastructures through Social Innovation (BEGIN), which is concerned with understanding new forms of governance in which municipalities and local stakeholders co-produce climate adaptation measures.
