Curriculum Vitae

Girma Eshete Genbere was born on 13 April 1978 in Arsihalila, Ethiopia. He attended his primary and junior education from 1984-1991 in Halila Primary and Junior School, his secondary education from 1992-1995 in Didea Senior Secondary School, Ethiopia. In 1997 he obtained a diploma in animal health from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

In that same year, Amhara Regional State Bureau of Agriculture and Natural Resources employed him as a district level animal health assistant. In 2005 he obtained his Bachelor of Education degree in Biology at Alemaya University in Ethiopia. In that same year he started working in the North Wollo Zone Agriculture and Rural Development Office in a number of different expert positions: biologist in water quality control; environmental protection land administration and use expert; and environmental impact assessment expert.

Later, in 2007, he became head of the North Wollo Zone Environmental Pro- tection Land Administration and Use Department.

Continuing his study, in 2008 he joined Mekele University in Ethiopia for his graduate study. In 2010, he obtained his Master’s of Science degree in Tropical Land Resources Management. During his Masters he had studied community management and status of an Afroalpine ecosystem, in the case of the Ethiopian wolf in the northern highlands of Ethiopia. This project was completed in collaboration with founding members of the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme from the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at the University of Oxford. After earning his MSc, he returned to work at the North Wollo Zone Environmental Protection Department as an environ- mental impact assessment expert. In 2012 he was awarded a Recanati-Kaplan scholarship and studied for a postgraduate diploma in international wildlife conservation practices at the University of Oxford, England. His postgradu- ate study paved the way for his PhD project involving both Leiden University and the University of Oxford. In 2013 he wrote his PhD proposal and he com- menced work on the study shortly thereafter.

His PhD project was a joint project between Leiden and Oxford Universi- ties. It was co-promoted by Professor Hans de Iongh from Leiden and Dr Jor- gelina Marino from Oxford. The principal promoter was Professor Geert de Snoo from Leiden University. Girma was awarded research and study grants by the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP), the Wildlife Con- servation Network, the Pat J. Miller Scholarship, the People’s Trust for En- dangered Species, the Rufford Small Grants Foundation, and the Louwes Fund for research on water and food. During the course of his PhD, Girma

was working as a research associate for EWCP in Ethiopia, part of a Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) of Oxford University. He is an active North Ethiopia team member of EWCP and since April 2016 he has held a project leader position at the EWCP Segre Foundation, North Ethiopia.
