I would like to thank all ofmy colleagues at the section ofplant ecology who were very supportive during my stay here. I am very grateful to Peter, Klaas, Kirsten, M artina, Grit and Sonja for sharing their information with me and for helpful discussions on this thesis. Especially my thanks go to Kirsten for all her encouragement and guidance.I also want to express my gratitude to Efy for her admini s-trative assistance,Karin and Cilke for technical help and Henk for all his help in growth rooms and during the field work.I would also like to thank M r.Quist for his help in crossing plants.

The NM R spectroscopy was supported by the group ofProf.Dr. Verpoorte and his two post-doc researchers, H.K. Kim and Y.H. Choi. I am gratefulfor their help especially to Kim for allher suggestions.

The HPLC-UV analysis was supported by Dr. N.M . van Dam of the Netherlands Institute ofEcology (NIOO-KNAW ).I appreciated her help and that ofCiska Raaijmakers.I would also like to thank Helene de Vos and Caroline M üller for their help with chemicalanalysis.

I would like to thank Theodoor Heijerman from W ageningen University for identification ofthe weevils. I am also grateful to the DuinwaterbedrijfZuid Holland for providing permits to work in the M eijendel area and their kind help with the field work.

Thanks to M artin Brittijn, who made the graphical design of this thesis and to Herman Berkhoudt for his photos ofthe weevils.

Curriculum vitae

I

was born on 22 December 1964 in Kashan, Iran. I started my undergraduate study at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran and got my B.Sc. in botanical sciences in February 1988. I did my Master of Science in plant systematics at Tarbiat Moalem University in Tehran, and graduated in March 1992. My M.Sc, thesis was called ‘Vegetation mapping of plants in the Kashan area based on a floristic method’. I was appointed at a permanent position as an academic member of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Desert Studies in Yazd University in 1994. During my work in Yazd University I taught botany and identification of Iranian pasture plants (level 1 and level 2). In 1995 I was involved in a project on collection and identi-fication of desert plants in the center of Iran, that resulted in the foundation of the Herbarium of desert plants in Yazd University. This project was finished in 1998. In 2000 I was awarded a scholar-ship by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran for a Ph.D. study abroad. In September 2001 I came to the Netherlands to start my Ph.D. study at the section of Plant Ecology at the Institute of Biology Leiden at Leiden University. My study was com-pleted in 2005, resulting in this thesis.
