British American Tobacco Nederland

Bron: www.bat.de
With approximately 23 percent of the market share, British American Tobacco is the second largest supplier in the German cigarette and tobacco market. In the past few years, the company has, compared to its direct competitors, been able to further expand its position in a difficult environment.
Germany is the largest European market for tobacco products after Russia and British American Tobacco has been represented in this market since 1926. In the past few years, British American Tobacco has been able to continually expand its position in the German market. This success was and continues to be supported by a contemporary brand portfolio. Lucky Strike, Pall Mall, Dunhill, Gauloises Blondes, HB, Lord, Prince and many more brands make up this portfolio. The fine cut segment also comprises brands such as Samson, Javaanse Jongens, Schwarzer Krauser and Westpoint.
In Germany, British American Tobacco has a balanced mix of international, national, classic and modern brands. The company offers its consumers the most comprehensive range of brands of all suppliers in the German market. In each market segment, from cigarettes and fine cut products to cigars and pipe tobacco, BAT has brands with a particular fascination and high growth potential.
The consumer has a choice of over 60 cigarette brands and brand variants representing all tastes. Annual sales for these products amounted to 25.9 billion units in 2004 (2003: 30.6 billion), which corresponded to a market share of 22.8 percent in Germany. In percentage terms, the fall in volume corresponds to the fall in the overall market for machine-made cigarettes, which has suffered considerably under the tax-related price increases in the past few years and the associated increase in legal and illegal imports from neighbouring countries.
In addition, 21.2 billion cigarettes (2003: 23.5 billion) were exported or produced under licence abroad. With approximately 1,800 employees, the German subsidiary recorded a turnover of 4.2 billion euro in 2004 (2003: 4.5 billion).
BAT features 4 times in the top ten cigarette brands
British American Tobacco sells four of the ten leading brand families in Germany (Lucky Strike, Pall Mall, Gauloises Blondes and HB).
Brand family Market share 2004 Difference 2003/2004 Gauloises Blondes 5,6% +0,4
Lucky Strike 5,3% +0,2
HB 4,1% -0,3
Pall Mall 2,5% +0,3
Lord 1,6% -0,2
Prince 0,9% -0,1
Golden American 0,4% -0,1
Dunhill 0,2% 0,0
The Lucky Strike brand family achieved a record market share of 5.3% in 2004 (2003:
5.1%). Growth amounted to 0.2 market share points and speaks for a considerably stronger growth dynamic, which covers both Lucky Strike Red and Lucky Strike Silver.
Following the expansion of distribution to markets in the west of Germany, the market
share of the Pall Mall brand family reached 2.5% (2003: 2.1%) and thereby continued its
successful course in the machine-made segment in both the west (0.9%) and east
(10.1%) of Germany. It also established itself in the preportioned fine cut segment and is
thereby one of the few brands that is successful in several product categories. Almost 15%
of this volume was apportioned to Pall Mall StiX, which, although only introduced in January 2004, is already among the leading brands in this product segment.
For Gauloises Blondes, the positive trend from the previous year continued. In 2004, this brand family achieved a market share of 5.6% compared to 5.2% in 2003. With a market share of 4.1% (2003: 4.4%), the HB brand family continues to be an important support for the BAT brand portfolio.
From 2005: A one-stop shop for all BAT tobacco products
On 1 January 2005, British American Tobacco (Germany) GmbH merged with the BAT company Brinkmann Niemeyer Group, which up to this date marketed other tobacco products in Germany and achieved a market share of approximately 22 percent. In the course of the year, the market organisations, which up to now have been operating separately, will be merged in Germany and will act as a one-stop shop for businesses and consumers requiring cigarettes, fine-cut products and other tobacco products.
Changed consumer behaviour and the associated major shifts between individual segments of the tobacco market are the reasons for this decision. With approximately 23 percent of the cigarette market and 22 percent of the OTP market, BAT has a significant market share in both segments.
Germany as a production centre
British American Tobacco (Germany) GmbH has a manufacturing site in Bayreuth in the Upper Franconia region of Germany. The company has a production volume of over 35 billion cigarettes and a technology and development centre at this site. Approximately 150 million cigarettes or eight million packets are produced in Bayreuth on a daily basis. The quality of the cigarettes and the image of the British American Tobacco brand always assure the consumer that s/he has chosen the right product.
The German cigarette market
While cigarette consumption in Germany in 2004 remained unchanged at approximately 160 billion units (2003: 170 billion), the negative trend continued stronger than ever in taxed machine-made cigarettes - industry brand products and cheap trade cigarettes. The total sales volume in this segment amounted to 113.6 billion units (2003: 134.4 billion) and was therefore 15.5% below the previous year's value.
Both industry and trade cigarettes suffered from the fall in volume, even if they did suffer to different extents. The drop in industry brands amounted to 16.3% or 18.4 billion units, while the cheaper trade cigarettes only lost 11.3% or 2.5 billion units. Due to the lower loss rate of trade brands, their share of the machine-made cigarette segment increased compared to the previous year from 16.1% to 16.9%.
The situation in the German market was aggravated by the increase in legal and illegal
imports from neighbouring countries and this was fuelled by the opening up of borders
within the context of EU expansion to the east.
Product type Sales volume in 2004 in billions of units Industry trade cigarettes 94,4 of which BAT (25,9) Trade cigarettes 19,2 Machine-made cigarettes 113,6 Classic fine-cut 14,9 Preportioned fine cut 13,5 Filter cigarillos 2,4 Pretaxed tobacco products 144,3
of which BAT (32,7)
Imports by private individuals 15,4 Cigarette consumption, total 159,7
Research presented recently by the German Tobacco Industry Association (VdC) relating to the proportion of illegally imported products consumed (it ranges between - 10 and 20 percent country-wide, in border areas the figure rises to 60%) also confirms BAT's market assessments that the tax increases in the past few years (2002, 2003 and twice in 2004) coupled with EU expansion to the east have led to an increase in smuggling and illegally produced goods rather than to a drop in consumption. These legally and illegally imported quantities are estimated to be in the order of 15 to 17 billion cigarettes per year.
In contrast to machine-made cigarettes, sales of lower-taxed and therefore less expensive
fine cut products (converted into cigarette units) increased from 21.6 billion units in the
previous year to 30.8 billion units in 2004. The volume growth of preportioned fine cut
products, in particular, led to an expansion of this segment. The sales volume in 2004
more than doubled to 13.5 billion units (2003: 5.5 billion). However, sales of classic fine
cut products (up 0.6% to 14.9 billion units) and filter cigarillos (up 0.6% to 2.4 billion
units) benefited from their attractive pricing (Chart below) (Stix are “vorportionierter
Feinschnitt”
Tax
On the one hand, the sales shift towards fine cut products shows consumer reaction to upward price trends caused by four tobacco tax increases within three years. On the other hand, with respect to the German exchequer, this segment was able to catch between 25% and 30% of cigarette smokers who switched over to fine cut products. The total market for taxed machine-made cigarettes and fine cut products in Germany comprised 144.3 billon units in 2004 (2003: 156.0 billion) and therefore lost 7.5% of its volume.
The ever-widening gap between taxed cigarette products and actual consumption in Germany affects not only industry and trade but also state income from tobacco tax.
According to the latest official tax estimate, a total of only 13.6 billion euro is expected (graph below) from tobacco tax for 2004. This is a considerable drop considering the total income in 2003 was 14.1 billion euro. If you also take into account the billion euro that is expected to be additionally realised due to the two stages of the tobacco tax increases, this results in a tax loss of approximately 1.5 billion euro in 2004.
The part of the retail selling price which is on account of the state is approximately 75% (Lucky Strike
original package). Less then 25% (24,51%) is on account of the profit sector.
In Germany the consumer price of cigarettes increased dramatically over the last past years. In the
figure below the European consumer prices can be found.

Bijlage 9: Kansverdeling
In onderstaande subparagraaf zullen drie kansverdelingen behandeld worden.
1. Poisson verdeling 2. Normale verdeling 3. Negatief exponentieel
Poisson verdeling
Normale verdeling
