1 Personal report of exchange – Spring 2020 – Caterina Giomi
Home University: Groningen Univeristy Host University: Uppsala University
1. My study programme:
I am currently enrolled at the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programe in International Humanitarian Action (NOHA) at Groningen University. During the last semester (spring 2020) I did the Erasmus exchange at Uppsala University, Sweden.
2. Language
The official language of teaching is English both at Groningen Univeristy and Uppsala Unieversity.
3. Finance and other conditions
During my studies at Groningen University and at Uppsala Univeristy, I am receiving the Erasmus Scholarship. This schosalrship has been crucial on determining my economical situation during my studies.
4. Preparation and contacts with the faculty before, during and after my stay
Both Groningen Univerisity’s and Uppsala University’s staff has been absolutely helpful and prepared to help me with the burocratic, economical, and personal issues regargind the mobility.
5. Housing
Luckily, Uppsala University offers to its students an accommodation at the Univeristy dorms, which are quite affordable and close to the Univeristy. We have all been
offered an accommodation in these dorms, which has been very helpful regarding our stay in Uppsala.
6. Culture
The Swedish culture is quite different from my own culture and the Dutch culture, but still very much compatible. Moreover, the University staff has been very helpful in providing us information to settle in in the new context.
7. Free time
During my stay in Uppsala, I had the chance to enjoy quite a lot of free time. The amount of hours dedicated to the study and the ones dedicated to free time was very well balanced. This translated in the capacity of appreciating and learning from our courses, and at the same time enjoying the new context we were living.
8. Travelling
Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we did not have the chance to travel around very much during our Erasmus exchange. Still, we had the possibility of exploring the area sourrounding Uppsala.
9. My host and home institution’s response to Covid.19, and the extent to which the virus (countermeasures) affected my mobility
Since Sweden was taking different measures to the Covid-19 pandemic compared to other European states, we had in-person classes for longer time than other
institutions. It took them one month more compared to other countries until they established online classes. Afterwards, online classes were programmed and carries
2 on very well and in a productive and stimulating way. In my case, Covid-19 did not affect much my exchange. Besides the online classes, we were able to carry on our exchange as before the pandemic, since Sweden never imposed a lockdown to its inhabitants.
10. Other
The whole exchange experience was very well orginised and planned. I had the opportunity to live this experience aware of the sustain from my home and host university. Moreover, during the Covid-19 pandemic, both my home and host University have been very much helpful and very flexible to meet our needs and to reassure us.
