From
genes

Culture
as

The
idea
ofthe
selfishgene
andthe
revival ofgenetic
determinism
provide
a new view of our relationship with ouTgenes.
Dawkins
(1976)
arguedthat
as self replicatingmolecules,
genes
have
no agenda otherthan
replication.The
phenotype
is
merely anextension ofthe
genorne
andthat
aninexorable
outcome of selfish Teplicationshould
be
phenotypes
capable of acclimation and manipulation oftheiT
environment.The
phenotype
is
the
vehiclein
whichthe
genes
reside, and as sueh,genes
are capable ofcoding
for
exceedinglycomplex
organs and organisms when underthe
forces
of naturalselection over sufficient
time.
An
extension ofthis
idea
is
the
concept ofthe
"meme".This
is
an extension ofthe
replicatorconcept
to
language
and
cultural
evolution.
Dawkins
notedthat
theTe
ayetwo

andideas.
Dawkins
defined
the
meme as simply a unit ofintellectual
or culturalinformation
that
suTviveslong
enoughto
be
recognized as such, and which eanpass
from

One
need only observethat
cultural evolution moves much more rapid}ythan
biological
evolutionto
begin
to
wonder aboutthe

humans.
It
is
important
to
notethat,
in
contrastto
genes,
memes
are
not
encoded

any universalcode within our
brains
orin

culture.The
