I would like to thank all people who have helped me and inspired me during my PhD study.
Firstly, I would like to thank Uli and Ru-Jin, my supervisors, who are always there when I need help, for their continuous support of my PhD study, for their patience, motivation and knowledge. Uli and Ru-Jin, thank you for always encouraging my research and guiding me in my career. I am quite lucky to have you as my supervisors. Special thanks give to Harro, I am grateful for his confidence in me and the freedom he gave for me to work. On a personal level, all of you inspired me by hard working and passionate attitude. I would also like to thank my committee members, Prof. W. Peters, Prof. M. Glasius and Prof. S. Szidat, for reading, commenting on and approving this thesis.
Then the “aerosol team” of CIO, Uli, Katrin, Max, Steven, Romke and Peng. I enjoy working with you in the laboratory. Also, thank you for the useful discussions during the weekly group meetings. Especial thanks also give to Katrin, my office mate, for being a great friend and chocolate sharer. Katrin, you are the most enthusiastic person I have ever met and I enjoyed working with you and making jokes. Thank you to bring me loads of fun and unforgettable moments. I would also like to thank Meng, Albert, Stijin and Haoyue for working together with me on the pretreatment of Chinese aerosols samples.
I am thankful to Dipayan, Henk Been, Marc, Anita and Dicky for your help with the AMS measurements and data correction. Your hard work ensures the good quality of data, which is very important for me to conduct this thesis. I give my special thanks to Henk Jansen, for the technical suggestions and assistantance in the lab and in my life. I appreciate that you translate the Summary for me in a fast and good way, even I asked help from you in the last minute. I would like to

extend my my thanks to all CIO people, all of you are nice and generous for help. The friendly atmosphere at CIO make me feel welcome and comfortable.
I feel very lucky that I met with Xing, Huala, Yehan and Xuan in Groningen, and we did not take so long to become good friends. We always cook together, play games together, travel together and share happiness or tough moments together. I would like to give a special thanks to Huilin. When I started my days here, I got nice suggestions from him. This is of importance to me to build up confidence and start a new research. Special thanks to Yingying, she helped me a lot when I was making the layout of thesis. Thank you for your kind help and patience to me.
