ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
So many people were very helpful in many ways before and during this PhD journey. The whole PhD idea started in 2009, but would only actualised in 2016, thanks to Dr. Pieter Boele from the Globalisation Centre, Faculty of Humanities. Pieter you played a very big role in helping me meet the relevant people and in securing the funding. Thank you for offering me the bicycle, which I would use when I was in Groningen. Prof. Jacques, and your wife, I am grateful for those discussions we had many times both in Groningen and in Kampala. Thank you for your encouragements.
Prof. Frank, I am so happy, very humbled, and feel proud and privileged that I was very lucky to be under your supervision. I learnt a lot from you, and I have matured academically under your professional stewardship. Thank you for dedicating your time and energy in making me accomplish my PhD on time. Thank you for your understanding of the working environment in which I was coming from. In many occasions, you did more than what supervisors do for their students, for which I will always and forever be grateful. Dr. Arjan, you did a good job as a co-supervisor, and I benefited from supervisory approach and skills. Ana Maria, I am equally grateful for all the support you gave me.
Many thanks to my paranymphs, Patrick and Angelo. You made life easy every time we met at international conferences like in Durban, South Africa, and Brisbane, Australia. I enjoyed every bit of the time we were together. Angelo, thank you for the bike as well. My first former office mates when I arrived in Groningen: Philippe you told me to start writing early, thank you. Lidewij, thank you for the briefs you gave me. Alice, Sr. Lucy, Robert, Cuthbert, Jimmy thank you all. To the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment, and the team of experts, I enjoyed working with you, and thank you for the trust and confidence you put in me.
To my family, Moureen thank you for providing the support and keeping the home in my absence. Mzee, Mukadde, Terry, Triny, Joan, Ruth, Justine, Anna, Sam, Moses, Margaret, Emmanuel, Joan Aduru, Patrick, Ayaa, Ketty, Semmy, Lydia, David, James, Kennedy, Mathias, Dan, Dorothy, thank you all. Cathy thank you for the laptop and all other support. My research assistants, Kizito Nyanzi, Eunice Busisa, and Joan Akello, thank you for doing a good job. All the informants who gave their time thank you so much. Prof. Pamela Mbabazi, I will always remember you for supporting my application. Dr. Andrew Ainomughisa, Barbra Nagayi thank you for always being there every time I needed your advice.
To my colleagues in Belgium, Prof. Stephan Parmentier and Prof. Arnim Langer, I am grateful for the collaborations we had together.

Esme, thank you for the logistical support that you rendered to me, am grateful. I am so much indebted to the government of The Netherlands, through NUFFIC for the generous funding.
