Files description

individual_dietary_proportions.csv – This file contains the diet data of each female (rows). This data was used to make the histogram of the proportion of each food item consumed (Figs. 2 and 3) and to plot the average gut ratio (Fig. 4). The column show details about the individual. Categorical variables include: site = sampling location, ind.ID = individual identification number, pool.ID = identification of the pool from which the individual was collected, feed.mode = resource use phenotype attribute to the individual based on the antimode of the distribution of the proportion of invertebrates in the guts. Continuous variables include:

fish.size = individual body standard length (mm), gut.length = the total length of the gut (mm),

gut.ratio = gut length / body size, detritus.tot.area = the amount of detritus in the diet (area of a

gridded microscope slide, mm

), inv.tot.area = the amount of invertebrates in the diet (area of a

gridded microscope slide, mm

2

), alg.tot.area = the amount of algae in the diet (area of a gridded

microscope slide, mm

2

), prop.det = proportion of detritus in relation to all food items consumed

by the individual, prop.inv = proportion of invertebrates in relation to all food items consumed

by the individual, prop.alg = proportion of algae in relation to all food items consumed by the

individual.

dietary_proportions.csv – This file contains the averages per pool within sites. This data was used on the GLMMs showing the relationship between fish density and the proportion of carnivorous phenotypes in pools. Each row represents one pool and columns show: pool = pool identification, site = site where the pool was located, origin = the presence of absence of

predators, n.diet = total number of individuals analyzed for diet in the pool, fish.dens.pool = density of fish calculated per pool (ind.m

) (see file fish_density.csv), canopy.pool = amount of canopy cover (%), fish.size.pool = average fish length (mm), int.lengh.pool = average gut length per pool (mm), invert.avail.pool = density of invertebrates in the pool (dry mass/m
