Acknowledgements

First and foremost, I would like to thank Ben. Thank you for your guidance, enthusiasm and inspiration. It was/is an absolute pleasure to be part of your group! Your everlasting energy, excitement and passion for chemistry are truly amazing. The labs you created, both the facilities and especially the creative mindset, are a real playground where the sky is the limit! I am happy to continue my career in Groningen, in a slightly different role, and am really thankful for all the opportunities in the past years.

Although on paper a PhD in chemistry, large part of the work described in this thesis was performed one floor down in the molecular microbiology labs. Arnold, thanks for being my second promotor and giving me the opportunity to work in your labs. I really enjoyed the combination of synthetic chemistry and microbiology. Thanks for the open door policy, discussions, teaching me a whole lot about microbiology and the incredibly fast corrections!

Wiktor, thanks for everything you teached me in the past six years. I learned a lot from you, about chemistry and biology, but also about how to communicate with people (although you can judge yourself if that succeeded or not). I hope to be around when your movie will be made, but wish you all the best continuing your already successful career!

Special thanks to Wouter Renkema, you are the high school teacher every student should have. Thanks for your passion and enthusiasm about chemistry and patience to deal with the 16-year-old me.

I would like to thank the reading committee, Prof. Adri Minnaard, Prof. Hermen Overkleeft and Prof. Andrew Woolley for their corrections and suggestions. Special thanks to Prof. Woolley for hosting me during my Master thesis and for being here today. I enjoyed every moment of working in your labs in Toronto and really admire your (way of practicing) science and amiable personality.

Daniel, George, Subhendu, Valérie, Annemiek, Clara and Ewa, thanks for being my student somewhere the past 4 years. It was great working with all of you and I wish you the best for your future careers. Jacques, thanks for choosing my MSc project. Although the start was difficult, you grew from an easily distracted student to a true scientist (spending your whole summer holidays with IGEM!). I am really grateful for all your hard work and dedication on the project described in Chapter 6 and hope it will be published soon!

Wim, it all started with your chromone project in the last year of my bachelor. I’m still happy that I chose that project, not only because that was the start of my photopharmacology adventure (and some nice collaborations!) but also because it yielded a great friendship. Thanks for being here for the second special occasion this

year, we really enjoyed it in June and for sure will do so today. All the best with your scientific career, every institute misses an absolutely stunning opportunity by not directly hiring you. I’m sure your creativity, talent and attitude will be awarded with a stellar (scientific) career!

Diederik, or Diederich for the selected few, thanks for the past 9 years. I think the circle is pretty much round now, we started our BSc together and are both finishing our PhD today. Thanks for being my paranymph and the other half of ‘the boys’. I think it would not have been half the fun without you!

Dusan, out-of-the-box, Kolarski, thanks for dealing with me in the office the past 3 years. It was great fun having you around, although I cannot enter any office anymore without checking if somebody is either filming or hiding or preferably both. I am honored with you as my paranymph!

Tineke and Inge thanks for keeping the group running, this is a formidable effort which cannot be complimented enough. Tineke, thanks for the amazing ceremony in June, you aced it, all the best to you and Edwin!

I would like to thank Femke Feringa, Michael Wegener, Michael Lerch and Amalina Komarudin for the fruitful collaborations, my labmates (especially Michael, Pier and Friederike for sharing an office with me), and the Biosubgroup and Feringa group members for the amazing working atmosphere and great fun! Thanks to all Stratingh members, technical and administrative staff for their support.
