Curriculum Vitae

Wietske Rienstra was born on New Year’s Eve 1986 in Joure, a town in the centre of Friesland, The Netherlands. She received her secondary education in Drachten at ‘het Liudger’. She graduated with honours in the field of ‘Natuur en Gezondheid’ with Latin and Chemistry as additional courses. Wietske chose to study Medicine at the University of Groningen where she completed her foundation year with honours. During her bachelor study she was involved in a medical research project for the Junior Scientific Masterclass at the department of Gynaecology. She did her clinical rotations in the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), and the Medical Spectre Twente (MST) and it was here that her enthusiasm for musculoskeletal pathology grew. Her senior year of clinical and scientific rotations took place at the Martini Hospital (MH) under supervision of dr. J.J.A.M. van Raay. For her master thesis she wrote an article regarding the clinical outcome, survival and polyethylene wear of uncemented total hip arthroplasty, and her interest in scientific research was awakened.

After obtaining her medical degree in 2012 she started as a resident at the Orthopaedic Surgery department at the Medical Centre Leeuwarden (MCL) and thereafter she gained broad medical experience as a resident in the Emergency Department of the Nij Smellinghe hospital in Drachten. In 2014 she started her PhD research at the department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the UMCG under the supervision of Prof. dr. S.K. Bulstra, dr. I. van den Akker-Scheek, and dr. M. Stevens. She worked as a full-time researcher for two years and after that she started with her training to become an orthopaedic surgeon at the department of general surgery of the MCL. In 2016 she realised that the surgical profession was not a good fit for her.

Beyond the Joint

In 2017 Wietske became acquainted with Rehabilitation Medicine and her enthusiasm for this profession developed while working as a resident at Revalidatie Friesland in Beetsterzwaag. She started her training to become a Rehabilitation Physician in the same year at the UMCG Center of Rehabilitation under the guidance of Prof. dr. C.K. van der Sluis and dr. H.E.J. Meulenbelt. During these turbulent times she managed to continue her research and was allowed to finish her PhD as a part of her scientific training in becoming a Rehabilitation Physician. Over the years she also followed a training program to become a scientific researcher in Epidemiology.

In her spare time, she enjoys sewing, needlework, gardening, and she is a keen reader. Wietske is married to Sjoerd van Belkum and together they have a beautiful daughter.
