Krishna Khargi was born in Paramaribo, Suriname on the 10lh of November 1958, as the second of

two sons. The family, moved to Aruba in 1960 where his father Sammypersad was appointed head of a primary school and his mother Helene resumed her job as a teacher. After a joyful ten years on this "Happy Island", the family moved to The Netherlands in 1970 where Krishna first finished the primary John F. Kennedy School and then the Thorbecke Lyceum in Utrecht where he passed his Athenaeum-fi examination in 1977. He started his medical training at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands in September 1978 and passed his medical "arts" examination in February 1985. He immediately entered the Internal Medicine training program of the Utrecht University Hospital (Prof.Dr. A. Struyvenberg), but started his first two years in the Elisabeth Hospital on Curacao, The Netherlands Antilles (Prof.

Dr. J. Saleh), followed by a rotationship in the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) Amsterdam, The

Netherlands (Prof.Dr.G. Tytgat). Because of his desire to combine analytic Internal Medicine expertise with manual surgical skill he applied for a training position in the Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, which was granted to him in the Sint Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein, the Netherlands (Dr.F.E.E. Vermeulen). His General Surgery program was conducted in the Sint Lucas Hospital Amsterdam, The Netherlands

(Dr. ƒ. Keeman) from 1998 till 1990, followed by a one-year Cardio-Thoracic training in the Sint

Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein; during this last period his father passed away, at the age of 58 years, after a liver transplantation. Krishna completed his Cardio-Thoracic training at the Academic Hospital Leiden, The Netherlands (Prof. Dr. H. A. Huysmans) on the Is' of April 1994 and continued

to be a staff member in Leiden followed by a permanent staff member position in the Saint George Hospital Hamburg, Germany since January 2005. He was invited as a permanent Cardio-Thoracic staff member to the prestigious Bergbau-Berufsgenossenschaftliche Kliniken Bergmannsheil at the Ruhr-University Bochum Germany (Prof.Dr. A. Laczkovics), in October 1995. During this period he conducted about 340 cardiac operations per year, including his overseas surgical activities. By now, he has operated over 2700 cardiac patients. On the 30th of November 1998, the first coronary

artery bypass grafting was performed in the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) Suriname in close cooperation with the University of Maastricht and the AZP personnel. His continued support and contribution to the Health Care in Suriname was acknowledged by the Government of the Republic of Suriname who awarded him in 2003 with one of the countries highest awards. Krishna acquired a special skill in the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation and reconstructive mitral valve surgery and consequently conducted 55 surgical tours in 22 different countries in which 240 cardiac surgeons and cardiologists were trained. He was invited as a reviewer to the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (Prof.Dr. L.K. von Segesser) and the European Heart Journal. In addition to that, he was requested as an editor for the arrhythmia innovation center of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Networks (CTSnet). He became a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS). On the Is' of June 2004 he was invited to apply for a position as

a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Haga Hospital, an 850-bed hospital in The Hague, The Netherlands and was subsequently admitted to the maatschap cardiac surgery, which has been initiated by his associate Kees Prenger. A constructive and flourishing future is anticipated in the innovative and stimulating environment of The Hague which next to a substantial Surinamese population also includes "the Heart" of the Dutch Government and its democratic institutions.
