My years working as a PhD has been an interesting and fun experience, but also difficult and stressful at times. This thesis would be quite a sad bunch of empty pages without the help and support I have received from so many colleagues and friends. Therefore I would like to use the last pages to thank those who helped me along the way. Since some of these are Dutch, I will switch between Dutch and English at leisure. De eerste woorden zijn voor mijn promotor Paul. Toen ik als afgestudeerde theoreet begon te werken bij ATLAS, wist ik eigenlijk niet zo goed waar ik aan begon. Maar jij gaf me veel leesmateriaal en opdrachten die tussen de theorie en het experiment in zaten, waardoor ik langzaamaan de brug kon slaan en uiteindelijk mijn eigen weg begon te vinden binnen het experiment (waar nodig met een kleine koerswijziging door jou). Bedankt vooral ook voor je opbeurende woorden en je steun wanneer ik mijn eigen werk weer eens niet goed genoeg vond. Olya, as my co-promotor you helped me tremendously, both in the first year and (especially) during the writing of this thesis. Thank you for reading all my first, second and third drafts, with always good insight and comments.
I also would like to thank the members of my committee for taking the time to read my manuscript thoroughly, which was probably a bit thicker than they would have wished. I’m very happy that once in a ‘bored with writing’-mood I Googled ‘Supersymmetry images’ and came across some beautiful artworks made by Marcel Wieffering, one of which made its way to the cover of this thesis. I really appreciate your generosity and kindness! Jon, bedankt dat jij van dit plaatje zo een mooi geheel hebt gemaakt.
De goede tijd in de ATLAS groep werd voor een groot gedeelte bepaald door de stafleden van de ATLAS groep. Dank jullie allen voor de goede sfeer, met die ontspan-nen maar toegewijde houding die Nikhef tot zo’n fijn instituut maakt. Stan en Ivo, bedankt ook dat jullie hebben meegedacht aan de titel!
Working at CERN and being a part of such a large collaboration was an interesting experience, since there was always so much going on, while the atmosphere was always amazingly motivating. This is in part due to the analysis and detector teams I have been working in. On the detector side, I am very happy to have been part of the SCT community. Steve and Dave, you were great project and operational leaders, both very encouraging of everyone, and you created a supportive atmosphere which I really appreciated. Manu, although in the end we did not work together very long, I enjoyed our time and appreciate the effort you put into helping me along the way.
Within the SUSY community, I’ve worked very happily in the 0-lepton group with Renauld, Dan, Nikola, Laurent, Sophie and Yu. Zach, our ISR study was fun for as

long as it lasted.. I hope you thought so too! Xavi, I think we did some nice work on the SUSY cross sections, thanks for the support and good times! Max en Geert-Jan, dank ook voor alle hulp met HistFitter en alle andere statistiek problematiek.
Nikhef has been an awesome place to work. Already when I was writing my Master’s thesis in the Nikhef theory group I noticed the great atmosphere in the institute. Upon starting in the ATLAS group I realised this was among others due to a great bunch of PhD students. Thanks Dox, Egge, John, Ido, Manuel, Joerg, Gabriel, Hegoi, Nicole, Gossie etc. for the fun times in the first years. Ik moet vooral mijn eerste twee kantoorgenoten noemen: Alex, de coolste punk-bassist ter wereld (of in elk geval de slimste); en Manouk, die de juhluh-mentaliteit uit Utrecht meenam naar Nikhef, en me daarmee een warm welkom gaf.
Luckily, the later generation of colleagues had the same knack for great time-consuming conversations about nothing or everything. Ingrid, Koen, Joern, Liselotte, Nika, Rogier, Peo, Priscilla, Magda, Geert-Jan and all those whom I’m forgetting, thanks for all the happy times. Veerle, dank voor het onderhouden van mijn tennis-skills. Chiara, I’m happy I could share the pain of writing a bit with you these last months. Ik moet ook (en velen met mij) Daniël bedanken, internationale vraagbaak voor alles dat digitaal is. Zonder jou zou ik nog veel meer geklaagd hebben over C++, python, Root, en die hele reutemeteut.
Mijn tijd in Genève zou heel anders zijn geweest zonder een paar goede collega’s. Roel, echt fantastisch dat jij altijd klaarstond als er iets moest gebeuren, zoals ver-huizen of gewoon biertjes drinken. Luus, jouw geïnteresseerde en opbeurende woorden hebben me op vele momenten geholpen. Lieve Roosje, het was echt heerlijk om op een gemiddelde zaterdag met jou in een café in Genève te zitten. Er is dan ook niemand met wie zeuren zo leuk is als met jou!
Like every PhD student, I have learned loads from the post-docs working along-side me: thanks Carolina, Rikard, Tatjana, Giuseppe. A special thanks to Pier-Olivier for all his advice on hipness, and Duc for arranging whatever needs to be arranged. Lastly, my work on SUSY would not have been the same, and definitely not so much fun, without Marija. I loved our skype-sessions, full of useful information, gossip and stupid jokes. You were the best co-worker I could’ve imagined. I really owe a lot to you. Misschien nog wel belangrijker dan alle inhoudelijke hulp was de steun van familie en vrienden, die ondanks mijn fysieke dan wel geestelijke afwezigheid de afgelopen jaren er altijd waren. Van alle QSSP’ers moet ik Floris in het bijzonder noemen: gappie, ik waardeer het enorm dat je me de afgelopen jaren maar bleef lastigvallen met de ‘maar hoe gaat het nou echt’-vragen, gevolgd door lange verhandelingen over heerlijke onzin. Niels en Tim, jullie nieuwsgierige enthousiasme voor wetenschap heeft mij de afgelopen tien jaar geholpen als ik het allemaal even beu was. Kasper, Anita en Peter, het was en is heerlijk dat jullie altijd in zijn voor een concert, dat er nog vele mogen volgen! Lieve Malou, bedankt voor het meebakken van de vele taarten afgelopen jaren – en op zich ook voor het altijd klaar staan, luisteren naar gezeur, en je positieve en actieve houding waar ik ooit nog iets van hoop te leren.
Ik ben heel erg blij dat ik straks mijn verdediging zal ondergaan met twee fantastische mensen aan mijn zijde als mijn paranimfen: Daan en Serena. Sere! I’m so happy that

you are staying in Amsterdam. With you and your enthusiasm around, everything seems easier and brighter. Daan, het was heel bijzonder om zo’n goede vriend te hebben die in Amsterdam én in Genève gewoon op het werk rondliep. Er is veel om je voor te bedanken, maar misschien wel het belangrijkste is het feit dat ik je altijd kan lastigvallen met een moeilijke situatie, of gewoon als ik me verveel. Natuurlijk ook duizendmaal dank voor de laatste paar weken, waarin ik je regelmatig in paniek opbelde en jij met goede raad strooide.
Lieve broers en zussen, jullie zijn allemaal fantastisch, of je nou echt of stief bent. Ik ben zó blij dat ik uiteindelijk bij jullie op de Cuyp ben beland. Bedankt voor jullie interesse en steun en de vastberadenheid om mij soms even weg te trekken van het werk, leidend tot biertjes in Gollum en onze eindeloze gesprekken over goed eten.
Mijn ouders wil ik graag bedanken voor het meedenken in en steunen van elke beslissing. Lieve Frans en Brigitte, bedankt voor het warme nest dat jullie hebben gemaakt in Wapse en de olm. Thuiskomen was zo de beste manier om uit te rusten de afgelopen jaren. Vicki, dear mum, I’m so glad you were able to be in Amsterdam so often during the last two years. I’ve loved all our science-filled dinners and walks!
En dan natuurlijk mijn liefste Myrna. Je hebt me de afgelopen anderhalf jaar meer gesteund dan ik ooit van je had kunnen verwachten. Jouw geduld waardeer ik enorm, beide met mijn gestress én met mijn oneindig saaie natuurkundige feitjes. Bedankt voor al je begrip en (organisatorische) hulp lieverd.
