Anthony Giddens onderscheidt zich van belangrijk geachte stromingen in de filosofie en de sociale wetenschappen. Deze verschillen zijn nog niet eer-der opgemerkt. Hij volgt de algemene linguïstische duiding van de latere filosofie van Wittgenstein niet en acht het aanbrengen van een verbinding tussen actor en samenleving zinloos. In plaats van een brug te slaan tussen deze twee polen in de theorie-vorming wordt de problematiek overstegen met een institutionele handelingstheorie. Zijn theorie steunt op de latere filosofie. Sinds kort is een nieu-we interpretatie van Wittgensteins latere nieu-werk beschikbaar dankzij een uitgebreid onderzoek in diens filosofische nalatenschap. De centrale vraag is of Giddens' alternatief voor de dualistische proble-matiek, die sinds Durkheim en Weber centraal staat in de sociale wetenschappen, naar de nieuwe
inzichten in de latere filosofie terecht op
Wittgenstein is gebaseerd. Giddens' institutionele handelingstheorie is vervolgens toegepast op begrippen als de hoog-moderne samenleving en burgerschap.
