Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook January 28 – February 3, 2016

Temperatures:

Below-normal temperatures (1 to 9 degrees C) persisted across northeast Kazakhstan from January 17 to 23, while near to above-normal temperatures (1 to 8 degrees C) continued across the remainder of the region. Minimum temperatures fell to as low as -38 degrees C across northeast Kazakhstan. The GFS model indicates that below-normal temperatures are likely to persist across northern Kazakhstan but temperature anomalies are predicted to be smaller during this outlook period.

Precipitation

Light to moderate snow (2 to 21 mm, liquid equivalent) fell across northern and eastern Kazakhstan from January 17 to 23, while mostly dry weather prevailed across the remainder of the region. According to the CPC Unified Gauge Analysis, precipitation has averaged generally above-normal across Kazakhstan with small anomalies (less than 25 mm) noted across parts of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Snow water equivalent values, based on model analysis, are steady or decreasing across most Afghanistan basins.

During the next week, locally heavy snow (25 mm or more, liquid equivalent) is forecast across the higher elevations of Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

This snowfall is expected to increase snow water content values throughout these areas.
