1. Edward Lorenz deserves a scientific biography. (chapter 1) 2. Invariant manifolds are very useful in a family of symmetric systems, where they can be used to reduce the complexity of
the system. (chapter 2)
3. For all dimensions of the Lorenz-96 model the transition from the stable equilibrium to a stable periodic orbit is known.
(chapter 3)
4. The thoughtful addition of an extra parameter to a model can be very useful, especially to identify organising centres.
(chapters 3 and 4)
5. The Lorenz-96 model cannot be obtained by discretising any partial differential equation. (chapter 4)
6. Multistability of attractors is a common phenomenon in the Lorenz-96 model. (chapter 4)
7. A clear route to chaos for general dimensions after the first Hopf bifurcation for both positive and negative forcing does
not exist. (chapter 5)
8. The probability of the expected type of weather should always be indicated in the weather forecast, as to prevent unnecessary disappointment and accusations both on the part of the public and the meteorologist.
9. Mathematics has as less in common with numbers as playing music with notes.

1. Edward Lorenz verdient een wetenschappelijke biografie.
(hoofdstuk 1)
