Samenvatting: Photochromic compounds have recently been put in the spotlight as a novel solution to a number of problems in biological and medical research. The electronic and geometrical structural changes of a photochromic molecule as it goes through photoisomerization can be utilized in a wide variety of applications. In this review we will discuss a few of the most used and researched photochromic

compounds: azobenzenes, spiropyrans and diarylethenes. Additionally, we will explore the applications of these compounds in molecular biology, supramolecular chemistry, optical data storage and medicine, with specific focus on applications in molecular devices, photodynamic therapy, photopharmacology and optogenetics. Finally, we will examine some of the obstacles faced by researchers working with these compounds, and discuss potential solutions.
