Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook September 3 - 9, 2015

Temperatures:

Temperatures averaged below-normal across Central Asia from August 23 to 29. Freezing temperatures (-2 to -1 degrees C) were observed across northern Kazakhstan. During the next week, the GFS model indicates that temperatures that above-normal temperatures will return. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain above freezing except for the higher elevations of northeast Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Precipitation

Light to moderate rain (2 to 20 mm) was observed across northern and eastern Kazakhstan from August 23 to 29, while locally heavy rain (more than 25mm) fell across northern Pakistan. The CPC Unified Gauge Analysis indicates that precipitation has averaged near normal during the past 30 days.

The Indian Monsoon typically begins to shift east from Pakistan by the beginning of September. Only isolated showers are expected across eastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan during the next week. The heaviest precipitation (locally more than 25 mm) is forecast across northeast Kazakhstan.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
