Central America Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

The third dekad of April was characterized by locally heavy rainfall throughout Central America. Many areas experienced a false start of season; however, southern Costa Rica experienced an early start of season in April. Rainfall

accumulation for Nicaragua has been a little low both for the month of April and the December to April Apante season.

The lower than normal rainfall totals should not have any major impacts on the sowing of crops because soil conditions are still average at this point in the season.

The above Water Requirement Soil Index anomaly graphic is indicative of the performance of the crops in comparison to normal conditions. The blue regions are reflective of where there has been rain in the past, but not enough to declare a start of season. The grey regions reflect where crop performance is about average.
