Curriculum Vitae
Xiaolian Yuan, was born on November 25, 1974 in Feixi, Anhui Province, China. After
middleschool,shestartedstudyingAgronomyatAnhuiAgriculturalUniversity(AAU)in
1993 and graduated with honor in 1997. From July 1997 until August 2000 she worked at
AAUasanassistantlecturer,focusingonthecoursesseedsphysiologyandmarketingofagro
products.DuringthisperiodshewasalsoastudentcoordinatoratAAU.
In August 2000, she was granted an NFP fellowship (NUFFIC) and started
studying MSc in Biotechnology at Wageningen University. From September 2001 to
February2002shedidherMScinternshipatProf.TonBissling’sgroupinthedepartmentof
molecular plant science of Wageningen University.Her research topic was “Characterizing
actingenefamilyinlegumeplantMedicagotruncatulawithrespecttoRhizobiumsymbiosis”.She
obtainedherMScdegreeinBiotechnologyinMarch2002.
In April 2002, she started a PhD project at the Institute of Biology of Leiden
University(IBL),undersupervisionofDr.ArthurRamandProf.CeesvandenHondel.The
topic of the project was “Disclosing the carbohydrate modifying enzyme network of Aspergillus
nigerbyfunctionalgenomics”andtheresultsarepresentedinthisbook.
Since January 2008, she is working at Microarray Department of Amsterdam
Universityasamolecularbiologist.

Inearly2002,whenIwasfinishingmyMScinBiotechnologyatWageningenUniversity,I
wanted to further broaden my knowledge on molecular biology, especially in the field of
functional genomics. An interesting PhD position was available from the fungal IOP
program.IappliedforthisandafewmonthslaterIstartedmyPhDprojectattheInstitute
ofBiologyofLeidenUniversity(IBL),inthefungalgeneticsgroupofProf.vandenHondel.
Now,afewyearslater,withalotmoreknowledgeandalotmoreexperience,the
project is finished. This thesis is the final tangible result. The project itself, however, was
enjoyable, of course with its difficult moments but I look back on a very nice period in
whichIdevelopedmyselfalot,bothprofessionallyandpersonally.
It would not have been possible to finish the project without many contributions, both
scientifically and personally. First of all, I want to thank the fungal IOP program for
financiallysupportingmyPhDproject.Thiswasessentialforthesuccessfulcompletionof
theproject.
