Joost Schokkenbroek (1961) holds a degree in History from Leiden University, the Netherlands. After graduation he worked for the Ministery of Foreign Affairs in The Hague and at the Kendall Whaling Museum in Sharon, Massachussetts (USA, 1988- 1990). In 1991 Schokkenbroek returned to the Netherlands to work as Curator at the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam. He serves as the Advisory Curator for the Kendall Whaling Museum and (as of 2001) the New Bedford Whaling Mu- seum. Schokkenbroek was Secretary-General for the Netherlands Association of Mar- itime History between 1992 and 1998 and was Senior Editor for the The Oxford Ency- clopedia of Maritime History (4 volumes: Oxford/New York 2007).
