Climate Prediction Center’s Central America Hazards Outlook September 26 – October 2, 2013

A third consecutive week of heavy rain was recorded across much of Central America.

1) Several consecutive weeks of above-average rains have led to dangerously high water levels along the Usumacinta River as well as localized reports of flash flooding and landslides. With additional heavy rain forecast for the next week, there is an elevated risk for flooding and landslides.

2) Abundant rains have resulted in numerous reports of river flooding and flash flooding in the Escuintla and Retalhuleu departments of Guatemala. With soils saturated, any additional rainfall could lead to flooding during the next week.

Heavy rains caused localized flooding in northern Guatemala during the past week.

During the last seven days, moderate to heavy rain (>25mm) was recorded across much of Central America. The highest precipitation totals (>70mm) were located in northern Honduras, around the Gulf of Fonseca in southern Honduras, western Panama and just offshore of eastern Nicaragua. Heavy rains (>50mm) were observed elsewhere in Belize, northern Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. The heavy rains during the past several weeks have resulted in elevated river levels along the Usumacinta, Esclavos, Motagua, Chixoy, La Pasión, and San Pedro Rivers as well as localized reports of flash flooding in the Escuintla and Petén departments of Guatemala. Across Central America, rainfall totals during the past thirty-days have been moderately above-average (120-200% above-average) with only eastern Panama observing below-average rains. Postrera season rainfall has subsequently also been near to above-average across Central America.

For the next week, heavy rains (>50mm) are forecast across already saturated areas in southern and northwestern Guatemala, which will keep flooding risks elevated. Heavy rains are also expected in Costa Rica, Panama and around the Gulf of Fonseca. Elsewhere in Central America, moderate rain (10-30mm) is forecast, which will help keep moisture conditions sufficient for Postrera season cropping. During the next week, tropical activity is not expected to impact Central America.
