Acknowledgements

The completion of my PhD program required the help and support of many people. During my stay in The Netherlands (September, 2011 - August, 2015) I have met people who have given me a lot of professional or personal help. Therefore, I would like to thank all people who helped me to finish this thesis.

First of all, notwithstanding tradition, I want to express my special gratitude to my promotor Dr. Flora Spieksma. Without her kind understanding and professional support I would not have been able to finish this thesis. I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Frank den Hollander for his thoughtful co-supervision of my study. Furthermore, I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Michael Katehakis and Prof. Dr. Sandjai Bhulai for the collaboration and fruitful discussion in the last years.

I would like to thank all members of the Stochastic Operations Research group Universiteit Leiden, The Netherlands. A special thank goes to my former PhD mates Laurens Smit, Herman Blok and Martin G¨oll. I thank you for the stimulating ideas, discussions and friendship during my research work in Leiden.

Further, I would like to thank all members of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta, Indonesia, especially Prof. Dr. Widodo, MSc., as my former supervisor (in the bachelor and master programs), for his warm support on my career and Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, MSc., as the head of Applied Mathematics Laboratory, for his valuable advice and motivation to finish my study.

I am also grateful for the funding received through the DGHE (Directorate General of Higher Education) Scholarship, the Directorate General of Human Resource for Science, Technology and Higher Education of the Ministry of Research, Republic of Indonesia.

Last but not least, I would like to thank my beloved husband, Eko Dwi Feranto, and our adorable daughter, Fatikha Rizqina Eka Putri, for their love, patience, and understanding during my long stay abroad. Finally I would like to express my thanks to my parents and family for their continuous love and support.
