Curriculum Vitae
Clemens Barends was born in Enschede in 1978 and grew up in Zuidlaren near Groningen. After finishing his school period at the Maartenscollege Gymnasium in Haren he first studied history for one year before he could commence his study in medicine at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In 2003 he started his training in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the Tjongerschans hospital in Heerenveen and the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, from which he graduated cum laude in 2005. He gained clinical experience in Namibia (Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital), Zambia (Lukulu Mission Hospital) and South-Africa (Nkandla District Hospital).
In 2007 he decided to specialize in anesthesiology and started as an anesthesiology registrar in 2008 at the University Medical Center Groningen, after working on the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit for a year. During the last year of his residency he became medical coordinator of the hospital’s Sedation Practitioners group and upon finishing his specialist training he was appointed chair of the hospital’s quality and safety committee for procedural sedation. In addition to this involvement in procedural sedation care in the UMCG, Clemens is a member of the department’s dedicated team for gynecological and obstetric anesthesia and he is an instructor in the national course for the Management of Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma.
Although he would conceivably have been voted ‘Least likely to write a PhD thesis’ during his study years, he was sucked into science by professors Absalom and Struys after what essentially started as a joke and ended in a publication in the British Medical Journal. 153
Clemens is married since 2006 to Elles de Vrieze-Barends, a woman with a heart so big it beggars belief and they have two children, Hanna (10) and Jens (8), who both possess the invaluable ability to make their fantasies happen in real life and to make real life become their fantasy. When family life permits he spends his spare time practicing the Israeli self-defense system Krav Maga (G1-level) and trains for, and participates in, outdoor endurance events such as the Para’s 10 (Colchester, England 2015), Goruck Tough (Princeton, USA 2017), the Fan Dance (Brecon Beacons, Wales 2018) and the Original
