Propositions

accompanying the PhD thesis

Optical preparation and detection of spin coherence in molecules and

crystal defects

by

Gerrit Jan Jacob Lof

1- Studies and applications of light matter interactions that do not consider spin properties have essential limitations in understanding and possibilities. Spin-sensitive methods should therefore always be part of the material characterization. 2- Defects add entirely different properties to a crystal which enhances possible

applications. Likewise, social structures that incorporate people who are different or think differently (social defects) exhibit greater overall performance.

3- It is hypocritical to uncritically embrace technological developments while being critical about scientific views that have reached great consensus.

4- The moral compass of our western civilization has been disrupted by a hunger for infinite growth and instant satisfaction.

5- Despite our intellect and morality we fall short in valuing other beings. Hence, the creation of more intelligent beings is only justified if their morality surpasses ours.

6- Subsidies for fossil fuels and biofuels should instead be spent on sustainable alternatives.

7- The circumstances in the Northern Netherlands are ideal to lay a foundation for a hydrogen economy. This provides a key role for the University of Groningen: to invest in the required expertise (knowledge and manpower) to overcome technological barriers.

These propositions are considered defendable and have been approved as such by the supervisors.

Stellingen

Gerrit Jan Jacob Lof
