Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.

FEWS NET is a USAID-funded activity whose purpose is to provide objective information about food security conditions. Its views are not necessarily reflective of those of USAID or the U.S. Government. The FEWS NET weather hazards outlook process and products include participation by FEWS NET field and home offices, NOAA-CPC, USGS, USDA, NASA, and a number of other national and regional organizations in the countries concerned. Questions or comments about this product may be directed to Wassila.Thiaw@noaa.gov or 1-301-683-3424. Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

July 3 – July 9, 2013

Temperatures:

During the end of June, near normal temperatures were observed throughout Central Asia. The greatest positive temperature anomalies (1-2 degrees C) were observed in the higher elevations of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Warmer than average (1-2 degrees C) maximum temperatures are expected for many parts in northern Kazakhstan, with slightly cooler than average temperatures forecast across the south. The hottest temperatures are forecast across southern Turkmenistan/Uzbekistan and southwest Afghanistan where maximum temperatures above 40 degrees C are likely.

Precipitation

Increased amounts of precipitation were received across many local areas during the last seven days. The highest weekly rainfall accumulations (>30mm) were observed across eastern Kazakhstan, and across parts of northern Pakistan where an extension of Indian monsoonal moisture resulted in locally heavy rainfall in the higher elevations. During the last two months, marginally below-average rainfall has been observed over parts of northern Kazakhstan. For the upcoming outlook period, moderate and well distributed amounts of precipitation are expected across northern Kazakhstan, with the potential for locally heavier rainfall across parts of the higher elevations of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
