About the author

Heleen van Dongen was born on October the 8th 1978 in Utrecht by a primary caesarean section because of a breech presentation. She attended the gymnasium at the Cals College in Nieuwegein, which she finished in 1996. After secondary school, she studied Biomedical Sciences (1996-2002) and Medicine (1999-2001) at the Leiden University.

During her studies, she performed research at the departments of Gastroenterology, Neurology and Obstetrics of the Leiden University Medical Center, and studied at the University of Vienna in Austria.

After obtaining her Medical Degree cum laude in 2003, she worked as a resident at the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Sint Antonius Ziekenhuis in Nieuwegein (Dr. H.S. The).

In December 2004, she was appointed as PhD student at the department of Gynaecology of the Leiden University Medical Center (Prof.Dr. J.B.M.Z. Trimbos, Dr. F.W. Jansen and Dr. M.H. Emanuel), resulting in this thesis.

In April 2007 she started her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Reinier de Graaf Groep in Delft (Dr. B.W.A. ter Harmsel). She will continue her training at the Leiden University Medical Center (Prof. Dr. G.G. Kenter).
