Maurits Nicolaas Cornelis de Koning was born on November 29th 1978 in The Hague, the Netherlands. In 1997 he passed his grammar school exam at the Stedelijk Gymnasium in Leiden, after which he studied biology at Leiden University (MSc 2002). From March 2003 onwards he started working on his thesis as junior researcher at DDL Diagnostic Laboratory.

Starting July 2003 he was also affiliated with the Leiden University Medical Centre, Department of Medical Microbiology, Centre of Infectious Diseases. In January 2007 he continued his career as Scientific Project manager at DDL Diagnostic Laboratory.
