Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook August 31 – September 6, 2017

Temperatures:

Above-normal temperatures (1 to 5 degrees C) were observed across northwest Kazakhstan from August 20 to 26, while near to slightly below- normal temperatures prevailed across the remainder of the region. The GFS model indicates that above-normal temperatures are likely to persist over Kazakhstan. An abnormal heat hazards is posted for areas of Kazakhstan where maximum temperatures are forecast to average more than 8 degrees C above normal and exceed 35 degrees C.

Precipitation

Mostly dry weather prevailed across much of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan during the past week.

According to the CPC unified gauge analysis, precipitation deficits are generally 10 to 25 mm across northern Kazakhstan. Thunderstorms, associated with the Indian Monsoon, resulted in local amounts exceeding 50 mm across northern Pakistan.

During the next week, rainfall (locally more than 25 mm) is expected to be limited to Pakistan and along with bordering areas of Afghanistan. Rainfall associated with the Indian Monsson typically begins to shift east of Pakistan during early September.
