Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook August 14 – August 20, 2014
Below-average rains observed over Hispaniola during the past week.
In the last seven days, increased amounts of precipitation were received throughout Hispaniola, with the highest weekly accumulations observed in central and northern Haiti, as well as, across western Dominican Republic. Since the beginning of August, seasonal precipitation has generally been above-average throughout central and northern Hispaniola, and average to slightly below-average in the south. Despite the recently improving moisture conditions, many local areas continue to experience seasonal rainfall deficits ranging between 50 to 80 percent of normal throughout both the Dominican Republic and Haiti, with deeper moisture deficits (< 50 percent of normal) confined along the southern coastline. The prolonged dryness is expected to continue to negatively affect local water resources and developing cropping activities. For next week, rainfall forecasts suggest a continuation of moderate to locally heavy rains over Hispaniola, with the potential for the highest rainfall accumulations over southern Haiti and western Dominican Republic. These rains forecast are expected to help alleviate many anomalously dry areas.
