Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook December 14 - 20, 2017

Temperatures:

Above-normal temperatures (1 to 7 degrees C) were observed across northern Kazakhstan from December 3 to 9, while near to below-normal temperatures (1 to 5 degrees C) prevailed across the remainder of the region. Hard freezes (minimum temperatures below -5 degrees C) extended as far south as western Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The GFS model indicates that minimum temperatures will average at or above-normal during mid-December.

Precipitation

Light to moderate snow (up to 19 mm, liquid equivalent) was observed across western Tajikistan and northwest Afghanistan from Dec 3 to 9. Despite this recent snowfall, parts of northern and central Afghanistan remained snow free which is atypical for early December. Abnormal dryness continues in northern Pakistan and parts of northeast Afghanistan where CMORPH precipitation estimates feature precipitation deficits ranging from 25 - 100mm during the past 90 days. Occasional light snow is forecast across northeast Afghanistan and Tajikistan (locally more than 10 mm, liquid equivalent) during the next week.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
