De auteur van dit proefschrift werd geboren op 30 december 1975 te Haarlem. In 1993 behaalde zij het VWO diploma (Atheneum-B) aan het Montessori Lyceum Herman Jordan te Zeist. Na in datzelfde jaar te zijn uitgeloot voor de studie geneeskunde, startte de auteur met de studie Biomedische Wetenschappen aan de Universiteit Leiden. In 1994 werd zij ingeloot voor de studie Geneeskunde aan dezelfde Universiteit. Van 1996 tot 1998 werkte zij, naast haar studie, als student-assistent op het Center for Human Drug Research te Leiden. Van augustus 1998 tot februari 1999 werkte zij aan haar afstudeeronderzoek getiteld: “Pediatric cardiac surgical skills: assessment of competence using an in vitro model” op de afdeling Kinderhartchirurgie in het Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children te Londen, Engeland (hoofd: prof. M. de Leval; begeleider: mr. M.J. Elliott). Het doctoraalexamen werd afgelegd in februari 1999, gevolgd door het artsexamen in december 2000. Vanaf januari 2001 ving de auteur aan met de opleiding tot cardiothoracaal chirurg middels een AGIKO-constructie.

Van 2001 tot 2002 werkte zij fulltime aan haar promotie-onderzoek op het Laboratorium voor Anatomie en Embryologie te Leiden (hoofd: Prof.dr. A.C. Gittenberger-de Groot). Van 2002 tot 2004 vond de vooropleiding Algemene Chirurgie plaats in het Ikazia Ziekenhuis te Rotterdam (opleider: dr. W.F. Weidema). Van 2004 tot 2005 werd het promotie-onderzoek vervolgd op het Laboratorium voor Anatomie en Embryologie, om vanaf 2005 tot februari 2009 de vervolgopleiding Cardiothoracale Chirurgie te voltooien in het LUMC (opleiders:

prof. R.A.E. Dion, drs. M.I.M. Versteegh). Van februari tot mei 2009 was de auteur als

cardiothoracaal chirurg verbonden aan het LUMC. Van mei 2009 tot heden werkt de auteur

als cardiothoracaal chirurg in het Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis te Amsterdam.
