Behorende bij het proefschrift ‘White matters. A longitudinal study on caus-es and consequenccaus-es of white matter hyperintensiticaus-es in the elderly’.

1. Het gebruik van (semi-)automatische volumetrische methoden voor het meten van wittestofafwijkingen is geschikt voor het herhaald meten van wittestofafwijkingen in longitudinale studies en valt te ver-kiezen boven het gebruik van subjectieve, minder nauwkeurige en tijd-rovende visuele schalen voor het meten van wittestofafwijkingen. (dit proefschrift)

2. Ernstige diepe wittestofafwijkingen komen vaker voor bij vrouwen dan bij mannen. Bovendien is de toename van diepe wittestofafwijkingen na een periode van drie jaar bij vrouwen twee maal groter dan de toe-name van dit type afwijkingen bij mannen. (dit proefschrift)

3. Een afname in de bloedtoevoer naar de hersenen hangt samen met de toename van de periventriculaire wittestofafwijkingen maar niet met de toename van diepe wittestofafwijkingen. (dit proefschrift)

4. De aanwezigheid en de toename van periventriculaire wittestofafwij-kingen in de hersenen hangt samen met een toename in mentale traagheid. (dit proefschrift)

5. Cholesterolverlagende behandeling met pravastatine heeft geen effect op het voorkomen van ischemische hersenschade drie jaar later. (dit proefschrift)
