Acknowledgments
Marthe, thank you for that PhD opportunity! Not everything went as we planned and dreamed, but anyhow it was fun. I would do it again.
Adri and Martin, I am grateful that you were there to give suggestions in scientific discussion and to give sometimes a new point of view.
I would like to thank assessment committee, Prof. Otto, Prof. Sollogoub, Prof. Bols, and the members of opposition, Prof. Woerpel, Dr. Artola, and Dr. de Vries, for taking part in my defense.
Niek, four years ago when I just started we got stuck in the same lab. I liked our sometimes philosophical discussion and appreciated to have a person to share my chemical struggles with. Zeynep, thank you for always staying so positive! Your motivation is contagious!
This thesis was possible only because I had great collaborations going. Most importantly, Alex de Vries! Thank you for showing me the beauty of Molecular Dynamics. Chunli and Paul de Vos, Cynthia Klosterman and Henk Schols, I am very happy how our study of the fucosylated cyclodextrin turned out! Thank you for being involved in the project!
I had a wonderfull group of students, from whom I learned a lot. I was happy to see you grow and develop! Thanks to Elmatine, who started cyclodextrin project, Jens, for your work on galactose chains, Jelle, for making trans-6-deoxytaloses, Ruben W. and Basak, for their efforts in making sialylated oligosaccharides. Thank you all for your contribution!
Pieter and Johan, not all heroes wear capes! Your knowledge of NMR equipment and ability to fix every problem is amazing! It is impressive how much one can learn from you about different NMR measurement and how to make a pretty spectrum (not to mention how to restart NMR and how to troubleshoot all the small problems that can happen with the NMR machine).
Paulien, thank you for being there for all of us!
Renze, Theodora and Monique, I am thankful you were always ready to help with your expertise!
Michela, thank you for fruitful discussions about immunological side of the project! I learned a lot from you.
Vinnie, I am thankful that you we also in Groningen and hopefully you will return where you belong ;)
