Ik ben geboren op 21 oktober 1981 te ’s Gravenhage. Het vwo heb ik gevolgd op de middelbare school het ‘Erasmus college’ in Zoetermeer, waar ik in 1999 mijn diploma haalde. Omdat ik niet direct ingeloot werd voor de studie geneeskunde, heb ik een semester Life Sciences & Technology gestudeerd aan de Rijks Universiteit Leiden. In 2000 startte ik met de opleiding geneeskunde aan diezelfde faculteit. Mijn interesse voor de wetenschap is ontstaan tijdens mijn wetenschappelijke stage in het vijfde jaar, waarvoor ik gedurende 6 maanden in een laboratorium heb gewerkt aan de National Institutes of Health in Bethesda MD, USA, onder de bezielende leiding van kinderarts dr. Jeff Baron. Hier deed ik onderzoek naar de veroudering van de groeischijf tijdens de lengtegroei van botten.
Na mijn afstuderen in maart 2007 werd ik aangenomen voor een promotieonderzoek naar de ‘zeer lange termijn resultaten na het coilen van
intracraniële aneurysma’s’, de LOTUS studie, bij hoofdonderzoeker dr. Charles Majoie op de afdeling Radiologie in het Academisch Medisch Centrum (AMC) te Amsterdam. Professor Willem Jan van Rooij, bijzonder hoogleraar interventie-neuroradiologie, was mijn promotor vanuit het st. Elisabeth Ziekenhuis te Tilburg. Per november 2010 start ik met de opleiding tot radioloog in het AMC. In het dagelijks leven ben ik getrouwd met Marc en met onze zoons Willem en Ted wonen wij in Amsterdam.
I was born on October 21st 1981 in The Hague. I followed high school at the ‘Erasmus college’ in Zoetermeer, where I graduated in 1999. Because I was not accepted for Medical School initially, I studied Life Sciences & Technology for one semester at the University of Leiden. In 2000 I started Medical school at the same faculty. My interest for medical science was born during an internship in my fifth year of Medical school, when I worked in a laboratory for 6 months at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda MD, USA, with the inspiring leadership of pediatrician dr. Jeff Baron. My research program focused on growth plate senescence.
After my graduation in March 2007 I was employed at the department of Radiology of the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, where I carried out a PhD program entitled ‘Very long term follow-up after coiling of intracranial aneurysms’, or LOTUS study. Dr. Charles Majoie was Principle Investigator in this project, and professor Willem Jan van Rooij, interventional neuroradiologist at the St. Elisabeth Ziekenhuis in Tilburg, was my promoter. In November 2010 I will start radiological training as a resident at the AMC. I am married to Marc, and together with our sons Willem and Ted we live in Amsterdam.
