Relief drawing set
A newly improved relief-drawing set has been developed by the Institute for Perception Research (IPO), Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The set gives the possibility of making by means of a ball-point durable embossed images that are immediately felt and visible (see Fig. 1).
The set can be used by the visually handicapped for several aspects of communication. By means of practical tests in close co-operation with the Dutch institutes for the visually handicapped, full attention has been given to the ergonomics aspects of the aid.
In principle, the drawing set consists of a rubber- covered drawing board provided with tactile centimetre divisions along two guide slots, and with two magnetic clamps between which special plastic drawing sheets can be inserted (see Fig. 2). In addition there is a T-square and a triangle, both also provided with centimetre divisions which can be traced, for instance, with the tip of the ball-point. These materials, including the drawing board, are made by a cast-moulding technique of a wear resistant cream-coloured plastic material. The complete set, as well as used and unused drawing sheets, can be stored in a specially designed plastic case.
By drawing or writing with a certain pressure, eg, by means of an ordinary ball-point, the relief-drawing set makes it possible to produce durable embossed representations, which are immediately usable on the written side of the plastic drawing sheets. The rubber layer underneath the sheet causes the plastic material to be raised (see Fig. 3). A fine texture improves the sensing and handling of the sheets.
Applications
The major applications of the relief-drawing set are considered to be:

An educational aid for the visually handicapped, emphasising abstract functioning, eg, to be used for the learning of writing, drawing, for lessons in mathematics, geography, for games, music, etc.
As a means of expression and for stimulating the imaginative faculty of the early blind; for teaching the early blind to write.
As a scratch pad for making brief notes, such as telephone numbers; for the elderly blind who may find it difficult to learn the use of braille.
As a means of written communication between a visually handicapped and a non-handicapped person.
The set is available from the Dutch Association for the Blind (VNBW), Kipstraat 54, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The price in the Netherlands is Hr.125 for the complete set, including 50 drawing sheets. Additional sheets are available for Hr.3 per hundred.
