AFZETTINGEN - MISTENUMMER 2003 18
Miste
2003,
an
impression
Birgitte Palm
andEivind Palm*We thenwent for the
place
and whatanexperience!
Theholewas 6 times
bigger
than inHeist-op-den-Berg
andvery rauch richer in fossils. Itwas
really
apleasure
tosee.Sten
(and
histeam)
fromFredericia(he
owns a museumthere,
that is indeed worthseeing!)
had madeabig
and veryexpensive
sieve and had rentedapump,sotheequip-mentwas in best order forus. He allowedus
kindly
totakepartin the
big
sieve many times andasthe waterflowwasrather
gentle,
mostof the fossilsweresecured inper-fect conditions.Infact the
only
limitwaswhat wecouldhold in thecar
(and
thatwasaproblem,
because the mate-rial waswet).
Everything
wasjust fme, except
for thefact,
thatBirgitte
hadpneumonia
all thetime,
and for thatreasonwehadtogobacktoDenmark before
planned.
But
part
of suchanevent is alsomeeting
othercollectors,
just
as crazy asourselves and wespoke
andmet manyinteresting people, people,
with whomwe aregoing
tokeep
in contact with in the future. In fact Herbert &EllenMoths
(whom
weknewinadvance)
havealready paid
us avisit,
andtogether
wehave beenlooking
atsomeof thebetter
specimens
from the Mistetrip.
Now wethink that
everybody
has todoa lot ofwashing
and
cleaning,
drying
andsorting
outall the fossils from theresidue. And best of all:put
names onthespecies.
Tous, that is themost
interesting part
ofcollecting,
andwehave
already
identifiedeverything bigger
thanca. 5 mm(nearly
300species
foundby now).
Butthereisalotmorematerial
containing
the smaller andjust
asinteresting
spe-cies.
And then it is
always
apleasure
toteil about thefindings
afterwards. Sowe haveto teil you, that wehavefound
onevery nice and
perfect

Butmoreis stilltobedisco-veredin the future.
Interesting
bivalves arefew,
but Monia anitae(Janse
&Jansen)
is not to be found in the Miste-book. We havefoundmore
specimens
of thisspecies,
commoninHeist-op-den-Berg.
Other collectors have found thespecies
aswell. Also oneLimatula sulcata
(Brown)
was presentinthe smaller material.
To
help
others, whotrytoputnames onthenastyNaticaspecies,
it isworthknowing
that Günter Wienrich(Wien-rich, 1999)
does not thinkthatNaticatigrina
and Naticahoernesicanbe
separated
astwospecies. That,
wethink,
couldeasesome headaches!
So,one
thing
is for certain: itwasanexperience
forlife,
verywell
organised (and
the weatherwasnicetoo!)
and ifthere is ever tobe another
digging
atMiste,
we will bethere!
(but
wehaveto finish whatwehavebrought
homeFirst!).

During
the winterrumoursspread:
“There isgoing
tobeadigging
in Miste.” At once ourattentionwas awakened. We did havesomeverynice fossils inourcollection from
that
place (a gift
fromavery generouscollector),
andwevery much would like to find
something ourselves,
but whenwespoke
with other collectorsthey
all toldus, thatMistewas over.No new
diggings
were tobedonehere.Butsome months later itwasa
reality,
andwe wereveryoptimistic
and talkedtoother Danes about thepossibility
andsoon we weretobealittle group of Danes
going

Therewere, in fact fourdifferentteamsof
