Unglaublich, aber wahr! Meine Doktorandenzeit naht sich dem Ende und

finally, I want to thank everybody who contributed to the completion of this thesis.

First of all, my supervisor Dr. Laura van 't Veer. Dear Laura, thank you for the warm welcome in Amsterdam. After providing me with the book 'UnDutchables' (a must for any foreigner who needs insights into Dutch customs), you also kindly offered me your couch for the first few weeks, which made my start very special. I want to particularly thank you for your trust and support over the past years. I very much appreciate your confidence in me and my research, which went to such lengths that you repeatedly gave me the opportunity to stand in for you at meetings. It's also great that you let me stay a bit longer as postdoc. Your never-ending enthusiasm is admirable!

Many thanks to my promoter, Prof. Dr. Sjoerd Rodenhuis, who was primarily involved in the first two years of my research. Dear Sjoerd, your enthusiasm and knowledge always made our MRD work discussions stimulating. I also want to thank you for the smooth handling of the bureaucratic part of my thesis.

Dear Hans (Peterse), your contribution to this thesis was indispensable in many ways. I want to thank you for the fruitful discussions and support. I sincerely appreciate your straightforwardness and constructive criticism. Furthermore, I enjoyed the histology teachings, and not to forget your good taste in books, which kept me away from reading scientific articles in the evening. I am glad that I finally can give something back by doing the archetype study with you.

Special thanks go also to Laura's angels. I'm still wondering what's wrong with us that our last attempts to increase the proportion of males failed so miserably? Anyway, I want to thank you all for a relaxed time and for persistently speaking Dutch with me. Astrid, your pre-work and excellent lab-skills formed the basis for a smooth start. Luckily you are also a good statistician and I got around without following the statistics course ©! Sometimes I almost regret that you taught me all the tricks of the Taqman. Annegien and Dorien, your experience and advice were always very helpful. I'm still surprised by the way at how many 'dropjes' a minute a human being can eat for breakfast without getting sick. Alina, all the best finishing your studies. Linde, you are becoming indispensable for our group, naturally taking charge of everything in our absence. And good speed to the BOOG team getting the aimed 5000! Marleen, finally a partner in crime! You possess the kind of enthusiasm and energy for science and research that I appreciate a lot!! Thank you for the stimulating discussions; I am looking forward for more (and our joint student's project). And don't worry, you'll surely get there.

A major heartfelt thank you to everyone at H6! Thea, what would we do without you? Martijn, we belong to the seniors now; good luck finishing your book. Juliane and Frauke, thank you for keeping my German alive and helping each other understand the Dutch habits and their health system in particular. The best of luck for you two! Dimitry, thank you for the excellent and trusty teamwork. Hugo, I have never seen someone so motivated and organized - Godspeed! Simon, your computer assistance made things so much easier. Hans J, I am very thankful for your help regarding the graduation at the UvA! It's too bad you can 't be here for my defense. Adrian, I want to thank you for the repeated spelling checks of my manuscripts.

My 'paranimf' Renske: Dear Rens, thank you for your friendship. I am very grateful that you dragged me out of the lab once in a while! I enjoyed our regular Amsterdam tours, including the (unfortunately mostly successful) Mexx stops. Without you my gym visits per week would be close to zero. Attending the kick-boxing lessons was a great idea (Accumulated aggressions? Us?)!

Furthermore I would like to say 'thank-you' to a number of people outside H6: Annuska and Lodewyk, your bioinformatical input has been absolutely essential for making sense of my microarray data. I also want to acknowledge the microarray lab as well as Guus for the QDA help. Marc, thank you for letting me work on your project. The Agendia renegades Arno and Anke: It was always a pleasure working with you (especially our tissue cutting marathons, Anke) and I found it a real shame that you left. Trudy, I appreciate your fast and friendly provision of the huge amount of articles I have requested over time. Moreover, I am indebted to Rene Bernards and Ed Roos, who, in spite of their own schedules, reviewed some of my manuscripts very quickly and gave constructive comments. I also want to thank Rene's group for the 'gezelligheid' and beer, accompanied by discussions about science but also other interesting subjects...

Finally, I want to thank my friends and family who I shamelessly disregarded over the past four years. Some I want to name in particular: Birte, thank you for your fantastic support and friendship. Your daily e-mails made me laugh even at the darkest days (Mannaaa!!), and our regular telephone marathons have also been indispensable. The best of luck for you and the completion of your thesis! Daniela, you are such a lovely friend and I am proud of how you get everything managed. My party isn't complete without you - I hope you can make it! Volker-Schatzchen, thank you for your loyal friendship (ich treulose Tomate) - I hope we'll see each other soon! Frauke, Sabine, Heidi, Clare, and Gesine, I enjoyed the time with you girls here in Amsterdam and it's a pity you all left again! Magnolia, I sincerely appreciate having you as a friend. See you in California? Mahalo for your support.

Dear Maike and Pit, a heartfelt thank you for unresistingly accepting all the decisions I made in life and for encouraging me to be myself. I very much appreciate your long distance support and enjoyed the few times you were here in Amsterdam. The same holds for Jan. I count myself lucky that we share so many things with each other - a week without a phone call feels weird! I also want to thank you for supplying me with computer programs and music. All the best for your judicial career! Hannes, I'm always astonished how much I can learn from you. The best of luck for you and your future plans! I also want to acknowledge my grandfathers for supporting my education and me. When I was a child, Doppolos already predicted that I'll get my PhD one day. It's a great pity that neither could even experience my master's graduation.

Dear Roderik, thank you for an absolutely incredible time!! I very much appreciate your ability to put things into perspective (especially when I was stressing out again...). A little more patience and then it's your turn to finish your doctorate. I look forward to the many beautiful and new things that will follow...
