Willemm Dekker [2004] Slipping through our hands - Population dynamics of the European eel

Curriculumm Vitae

Willemm Dekker was born on Saturday Februaryy 11,1956 in Doornn (Utrecht), the Netherlands. Following elementary schooll in Driebergen and Almelo, he got his secondary educationn (Gymnasium |3) at the Erasmus Lyceum in Almelo.. Since 1974, he studied at Groningen University, andd in 1983 he received his MSc in Animal Ecology (sub-sidiariess in Population Genetics and Fisheries Biology) withh the qualification cum laude. A major part of his MSc trainingg concerned the mathematical analysis of the mul-tispeciess models of the North Sea fisheries, and the statis-ticall analysis of prey size preference of North Sea cod. Thiss work took place at the Netherlands Institute for Fisheriess Research RTVO in IJmuiden.

Sincee 1984, he has been permanently employed at RIVOO in IJmuiden - initially as computer programmer, butt soon as fisheries biologist, focusing on the inland eel fisheries.. From 1989 onwards, he has been Head of the Inlandd Fisheries Department for some years. As time passedd by, political priorities altered, necessitating shifts inn his research portfolio: around 1990, research on the typ-icall inland fisheries (outside Lake IJsselmeer) was discon-tinuedd and further staff reductions diluted the eel researchh completely. Finally, from 2000 to 2002, when he

receivedd a RTVO-specific part-time grant (Strategische

ExpertiseExpertise Ontwikkeling, Strategic Development of

Expertise),, he decided to return to his initial research theme:: the population dynamics of the eel. This grant has enabledd (completion of) most of the research presented in thiss thesis.

Willemm Dekker has been a member of the Eel Working Partyy of the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Committeee EIFAC, and of the Eel Working Group of the Internationall Council for the Exploration of the Sea ICES, bothh since 1985. He has participated in international rese-archh projects on eel, and initiated and coordinated the internationall project on glasseel monitoring (Dekker (ed.) 2002),, covering 19 countries in Europe and the Mediterraneann area. He has chaired the ICES Working Groupp from 1988 to 1991, whereafter this Group was mer-gedd with the EIFAC Eel Working Party. Since 1997, he has holdd the chair of this combined Working Group.
