It is not easy to find the right words to thank everyone who directly (and indirectly) contributed to this thesis, because it would easily fill so many pages... I’ll start with the commission members: Prof. J. de Bakker, Prof. R. Hauer, Prof. Y. Pinto, Prof. N. Blom, Prof. P. Schwartz and Dr. I. van Langen: a sincere thank you for accepting to be part of the commission and for carefully reading the manuscript. My promotor, Prof. Arthur Wilde. Dear Arthur, I would like to thank you for the wonderful opportunity that you gave me by offering me a job in your group not only as a clinical researcher, but also as a medical doctor. I am impressed by your knowledge in clinical and molecular cardiology and by your intellectual skills. I appreciate your velocity in correcting our papers and responding to my questions, despite your agenda being extremely busy. You have also given me a concrete help in learning Dutch. For all this, I am very grateful.
My co-promotor, Dr. Hanno Tan. Dear Hanno, everything started from the moment I contacted you per mail in 2003. I was very happy when you accepted me as a student starting from September 2003 in your group. The funny thing is that when I finally came, you had forgotten that I was supposed to start that day, so there was no place for me! Now that I know you better, I see that this is just the way you are, a real “artist in science” who does not pay too much attention to the practical things. I feel lucky to have had a very competent and friendly supervisor like you. I appreciate the passion you put into your work and I am very grateful for your help in the writing process.

Dr. Connie Bezzina: dear Connie, it has been very nice to share the room with you, Hanno and Simona during the first months of my stay. I’m happy about the publications we did together and I wish you the best with your career. Dear Simona, you left the Experimental Cardiology one year ago and I’ve missed you a lot. Our conversations in Italian were always very intensive and served as a valvola di sfogo (lees “uitlaatklep”) for me, especially because it always ended up with a stomach pain from the laughing. With the years I got to know you as a very generous person and I’m very grateful that you are such a good friend to me. The collaboration with the colleagues from France has been essential for keeping up the good work: Prof. Vincent Probst, Dr. Frederic Sacher, thank you very much for the productive collaboration. The same goes for the group of Electrophysiologists at the University of Mannheim: Prof. Christian Wolpert and Dr. Christian Veltmann: I really appreciate your work and I have enjoyed our conversations at the congresses a lot.
Alle AIOS en cardiologen van de afdeling cardiologie in het AMC wil ik bedanken voor de fantastische manier waarop ze me in hun groep hebben geaccepteerd, de leerzame samenwerking, voor de interesse en de steun in mijn promotietraject. Datzelfde geldt voor alle verpleegkundigen van de afdelingen F3 Zuid (met Debby en Yvonne) en F3 Noord. Mw. Ninke Hofman van de afdeling Klinische Genetica: Beste Ninke, ik kon altijd bij je langs komen met een lijst namen van patiënten (ook nog verkeerd gespeld) die gekoppeld moesten worden met de verschillende typen mutaties, je hulp hierbij en je enthousiasme vond ik geweldig!
Alle cardiologen en medewerkers van Praktijk Geervliet wil ik bedanken voor de super vriendelijke en gezellige sfeer. Bart Goldhoorn, met veel plezier zie ik dat je bereid bent om alle ICT problemen op Geervliet op te lossen, net zoals in het AMC.

Dr. Wouter Kok, cardioloog. Beste Wouter, ik ben je dankbaar voor de geweldige samenwerking op de afdeling F3 Zuid en op de Hartfalen polikliniek. Ik kon me geen beter “maatje” wensen. Ik ben je ook dankbaar dat je mijn paranimf wilde zijn (het duurde even voor dat je JA zei…), en voor het uitzoeken van een mooie locatie voor mijn feest! De leuke momenten samen zijn te veel om ze hier te noemen, het idee om op vrijdagavond uit te gaan eten om “alvast een goed restaurant te vinden voor het promotiediner” vond ik geweldig en heeft ertoe geleid dat we allerlei lekkere culinaire ervaringen hebben opgedaan!
En dulcis in fundo, my big love Jippe: my dear one, it took me only a few days to realize that you were too special to let go, so here I am! I’m putting this black on white: you make my life richer and for you I would go to the other side of the world...!!!! Thank you for all your help and for being my paranimf. You are my soulmate!
