When I started my PhD I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. I may have received some warnings, but chose to totally ignore them. However thanks to the help of my colleagues, supervisors, professors, friends and family I did finally manage to bring it all to a happy end. Let me try and start by thanking my colleagues in chronological order. It all started with Andy Pimentel whom i would like to thank for suggesting to me and Bob Hertzberger that I could do a PhD after I mentioned I somewhat missed the artificial intelligence component as a researcher in the field of embedded systems, my job at the time. Bob is the second person I would like to thank for actually giving me the opportunity to do my PhD and giving me a lot of freedom in determining the subject. He provided me with Arnoud Visser (who also supervised my Masters thesis) and Geleyn Meijer as my supervisors.

Arnoud I would like to thank for support early on in my research and es-pecially for helping me in attracting and supervising Peter Schouten( Thanks for your work as well Peter) as a mastersstudent for my research.

Geleyn I would like to thank for sticking with me all the way, he has been the most constant factor in my PhD research, but also for taking me out-side the world of academic research by involving me in multiple commercial academic cooperations.

Many thanks also go out to my former Colleagues from Andy’s embed-ded system research. Joe Coffland and Cagkan Erbas and especially Simon Polstra whom I kept sharing a room with long after I started my PhD.

Next I would like to thank Willem Bouten for giving me the opportunity to get started with models and data from the BAMBAS project when the arrival of traffic data took a little longer than expected. Special thanks goes out to Emiel van loon who provided me with lots of help and advise, but I also should not forget Scott, Jelmer, Judy, Luit and Hans.

Then there’s the VLAM team which I joined very early on in my re-search. My thanks go out to Dmitry, Vladimir, Piter, Victor, Hakan, Wibi, Zhiming and Adam. I would like to thank Adam Belloum and Zhiming Zhao especially for all the input they gave for my research. For His insights into control theory and for supporting my traffic research I would like to thank Hans Hadderingh at Logica.

156 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The downside of thanking people in chronological order is that some of the most important people get mentioned relatively late. Fact is though that I had already met a lot of people before Pieter Adriaans first helped me with my research. First just as an adviser but later as my promotor when Bob Hertzberger went into retirement. Without his help though I would probably not have finished this work, the theoretical insight he thought me really helped in getting some much needed science into my work. One hour brainstorming on a whiteboard with Pieter can keep you busy for weeks putting the ideas of one such session to paper. Many thanks to you Pieter for your input and for being my promotor.

With Pieter becoming my Promotor I also moved to the HCS lab and into a different research environment with many new colleagues. Suddenly I was surrounded by a very large number of fellow PhD students, the social activities with Sophia, Wico, Vera, Niels, Victor, Jochem, Henriette, Simon and Katja provided a welcome diversion. Frits de Vries was a great room-mate for the last few years. Maarten van Someren I would like to thank for his help and feedback on my work, he is a great source of knowledge.

Scott Marshall deserves a special thank you for pointing me towards Constraint Automata and Farhad Arbab, who also deservers a thank you for explaining his work concerning them. Sometimes the best solution is so close it is easily overlooked.

Finally of all my colleagues I would like to thank Marco Roos It was great Cooperating with you in the very last part of my work at the UvA.

Now that I have have thanked all my colleagues, and I sincerely apologize to anyone I have forgotten. I would like thank all of my friends and family for their support. A special thanks goes out to Roger Latton, who is a good friend of the family but might just as well be family, for proof reading my thesis.

Justus, thank you for all the effort you have put into the cover design. Last but certainly not least I thank both my parents, who provided critical and important input in the finishing stages of my thesis.
