Abstract$$
This! thesis! analyses! the! commodification! of! security! in! South! Africa! and! explores! the! factors! that! amount! to! the! overall! perceptions! of! residents! towards! security! commodification! in! a! Capetonian! suburb.!This!thesis!offers!an!analysis!of!the!major!factors!that!influence!how!residents!who!purchase! private!security!perceive!that!service.!This!thesis!builds!upon!the!literature!that!discusses!the!fear!of! crime! as! well! as! more! sociological! theories! of! consumerism! in! South! Africa! and! that! security! is! increasingly! provided! by! the! private! sector.! The! fear! of! crime! plays! a! pivotal! role! in! unearthing! perceptions!towards!security!and!aides!the!explanation!of!why!residents!perceive!private!security!as! a!necessary!investment!even!though!crime!rates!are!reducing!in!the!country.!Using!a!mixed>method! approach!to!gather!quantitative!and!qualitative!data,!the!results!provide!complex!opinions!towards! security! commodification,! as! well! as! correlations! between! social>economic! variables! and! fear! of! crime.!In!a!wider!field,!this!thesis!offers!a!unique!insight!into!a!commonplace!residential!community! and! captures! perceptions! of! the! residents! themselves! about! security! commodification.! It! addresses! the! reasoning! behind! those! perceptions;! highlighting! the! relationship! between! the! fear! and! talk! of! crime,!and!perceptions!of!private!security!schemes.!This!thesis!emphasises!the!differences!between! actual!crime!rates!and!perceived!crime!rates!gathered!from!past!research,!and!uses!this!discrepancy! to!form!the!argument!that!residents!deem!private!security!as!essential!in!order!to!feel!safer.!Yet,!these! security!measures!do!not!completely!relieve!residents!of!their!fear.!These!findings!suggest!that!the!a! communities! perceptions! on! crime! can! be! influenced! more! by! non>factual! hearsay! than! actual! statistics,!rendering!the!private!security!market!as!a!lucrative!and!self>perpetuating!business!model.! The!crux!of!this!thesis!concludes!that!crime!is!an!everyday!occurrence!which!has!resulted!in!residents! approaching!the!subject!fearfully,!most!likely!caused!by!the!feelings!of!vulnerability!and!helplessness! felt!by!this!cross>section!of!a!typical!middle>class!community.!Despite!feelings!of!insecurity,!residents! have!embraced!the!commodification!of!security!and!intend!to!utilise!their!buying!power!to!shape!a! new!model!for!their!local!private!security!service.!! ! !
