Well, where to start? Nothing would have been possible without the help and support of all of you…

Bianca, first of all I would like to thank you to have given me the chance to work in your group. Most likely because you have 2 boys, you had the patience to provide time, priceless scientific output and guidance, and money (quite crucial in these days), which allowed me to learn from my mistakes (a lot of them) and to lead this project to an end. Heike, do you have any idea how difficult it is to take over such an outstanding piece of work? Anyway thanks for initiating me to the real world of science, I hope I made the best of the data you left on the way.

Marion, a significant part of this thesis is the result of your incredible technical skills in molecular biology, and your ability to make me feel old when going out... You are definitely one of a kind, but for sure a good one to pursue a successful career in fundamental research.

Melania, we have done a good job together, I am sorry I was sometimes not the most reliable co-worker. Good luck for your PhD thesis.

Loes, I give you the key of my messy -20C and -80C freezers, thanks for your great help, good luck. Take good care of Marius, I am gonna miss him.

Maho, you had to deal with my hectic way of working in the lab, my “French arrogance”, and some of my morning hangovers, sorry for that. Honesty is, together with amazing technical skills, two of your numerous qualities, and luckily passion for beers is one of the passions we had in common. ;-)

Nicolas & Mireille, Remko, you have been (with or without beer) my indefectible scientific supporters. I would not be where and who I am now without you guys. Hope we will share, together with your cute little families, a lot of good food, wine, and Belgian beers, in the years to come.

Berend, how could you let me use a quarter of a million euros machine on my own? Thanks for your support; I might miss our chatty days in this room without windows... Beste wense voor de toekomst.

Anja, Marc, Marc, Arjen, Etsuko, Martino, and Esther, you abandoned me on the way but I would like to thank you for everything, including how to make an arrow with

Adobe Illustrator, how to enjoy Slam FM in the ML2 lab, how to do proper cloning, how to plan a full PhD thesis only 1 month after its start, how to drink Jenever with Cola, how to enjoy a beer after 75 km mountain biking.

Christina, Gaith, Rosa, it has been such a joy to complain about our supervisors and the rudeness of working in science.

Jenny, thanks for your inspiration and for convincing me that it was possible. You have been the sunny one during my cloudy scientific times...

Przemek, Tony, Giorgos, Andy, we had so much fun in Amsterdam.

Toni & Marc, you were the first to make me feel like being part of this country; you are the most accurate definition of “Gezelligheid”. Tot de vorende BBQ.

Emanuele, thanks for sharing your two homes with me; your apartment and the Waterhole. Shall we go my friend?

Mathilde and Rebecca, you are my Paranymphs because you are the two persons who know me best; to the point that my sister got jealous of you. We shared so much together, including laugh and tears, houses, bars, and boats... and so many memorable moments. I hope you will always be part of my life. Mathilde, I will always be there to protect you from psychopathic pigeons.

Maman et Papa (Bob), Claire, avoir parfois fait passé la science avant la famille témoigne de ma détermination, et je vous remercie de ne pas m’en avoir tenu rigueur et d’avoir toujours été là pour moi. Je vous aime.

I want to sincerely apologize to all the people I might have hurt or disappointed along the way... But without all of you, I would still be a Broekie...
