The world can stamp out the Ebola outbreak in West Africa by the end of the year but months of 1

tough work remain, the outgoing chief of the United Nations' anti-Ebola mission said on Friday. 2

The outbreak, first identified in Guinea's remote southeast in early 2014, has struck six 3

West African nations, with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia bearing the brunt of the 20,000 4

infections and nearly 8,000 dead. 5

Faced with criticism the world was not doing enough, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-6

moon set up the U.N. Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) mission in September to 7

coordinate global efforts. 8

"We have not come anywhere close to ending the crisis. We’ve done a lot in 90 days in a 9

very successful response but we have a long and difficult way to go," Anthony Banbury told 10

reporters in Accra, where the U.N. mission is based. "It's going to go on for not just weeks but 11

some months more. But I believe we will do it in 2015 and we’re going to do it by working very 12

closely not just with governments of the countries but the communities," he said. Banbury will 13

be replaced by veteran humanitarian official Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania on Saturday. 14

A spike of cases in Sierra Leone meant UNMEER missed its target of ensuring that by 15

early December 70 percent of all Ebola patients were being treated in isolation units and 70 16

percent of all those who died from Ebola were buried properly. Banbury said there were now 17

enough functioning treatment centers in the region. 18

The target of 100 percent safe burials by end of January 2015 was on track now that there 19

were some 254 safe burial teams operating in the affected countries. 20

Six other countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, the United States, Spain and 21

Britain, have reported cases imported from the worst affected countries. 22

Last week, a nurse was diagnosed with the virus in Britain upon her return from Sierra 23

Leone. She is being treated with blood plasma from a survivor of the virus and an experimental 24

antiviral drug, according to the London hospital treating her. 25

Bill Cosby’s attorney is fighting the New York Daily News over its story in which an ex-1

girlfriend of Sammy Davis Jr. claims the comedian raped her. 2

In a letter dated Monday, Marty Singer demands the Daily News publish a retraction and 3

correction and threatens legal action. He writes that the story is part of the Daily News’ “ongoing 4

pattern of recklessly and maliciously publishing outlandish stories about my client fitting with its 5

predetermined smear agenda.” 6

Katherine McKee, 65, told the Daily News that Cosby raped her in the early 1970s while 7

she was on tour with Davis. In the story, published Monday, she claims the comedian assaulted 8

her when she visited his hotel room to bring him some barbecue. 9

She told the newspaper she stayed silent until other accusers began coming forward. “I 10

figured, “If I don’t think about it, it won’t bother me,’” she said. “I chalked it up to another 11

powerful person in Hollywood who just felt he could take what he wanted from women.” 12

Singer, who has been vocal in support of his client, wrote that the story fits a pattern of 13

one-sided coverage of the accusations against Cosby. “The media has consistently refused to 14

look into or publish information about various women whose stories are contradicted by their 15

own conduct or statement,” he writes. 16

He argues that McKee’s allegations are contradicted by positive comments she’s made 17

about Cosby and her conduct toward him online. The letter refers to her “liking” a YouTube 18

video of Cosby’s comedy and posting a friendly message, a promotional webpage for an acting 19

class in which she mentions her work with Cosby, and an interview in which she said Cosby 20

“treated me wonderfully.” 21

“Why would someone who was allegedly raped 'like' a comedy video by their alleged 22

attacker?” Singer writes. “Why would she list her appearance on his show at the top of her list of 23

professional accomplishments? It defies credibility.” 24

The letter goes on to call McKee into question due to her previous job as a Las Vegas 25

showgirl, citing the interview in which she is quoted saying she "did a lot of lying” as a showgirl. 26

The Daily News should have found that her background and her previous conduct toward 27

Cosby were enough to make her story unreliable, Singer claims. He writes, "The enormous 28

disparity between the Daily News story and her public words and conduct establish that the Story 29

was published recklessly and with constitutional malice." 30

The Daily News’ legal representative, to whom the letter was sent, has not yet responded 31

to request for comment. 32

Singer went after CNN on Friday for its coverage of supermodel Beverly Johnson’s 33

allegations against Cosby, and TMZ reports the network has responded. 34
